    The guest was Kathy Clark, Communications Director with the Conroe ISD. Conroe is the city of license for 106.9. The issues we discussed included recent district budget cuts, standardized testing, drop-out rates and the very difficult fiscal decisions faced by school districts across Texas.

  • Community Platform - Fellowship of Christian Athletes

    The guests were Eric Anderson, Area Director and Tyrone Smith, Community Director and former NFL player with the San Francisco 49ers. Both men are with the non-profit, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The issues we discussed included summer camps for area youngsters that will be held in and around the Houston area including College Station. We also discussed ethics in athletics in light of the New Orleans “bounty program”. We also discussed how FCA is influencing the lives of young athletes.

  • Community Platform - Katy Rocks 5/3

    The guests were Mary Holman, Founder of “Katy Rocks” and Patrick Mouton, Director of the Aldine-Westfield branch of the Salvation Army. Katy Rocks is a non-profit who teaches children how to play a musical instrument and oftentimes provides the instrument free of charge. Mr. Mouton talked of children in his community who have benefited from the efforts of Katy Rocks.

  • Community Platform - Ride for Kids 4/22

    The guests were Dr. Will Parsons, an Oncologist at Texas Children's Hospital and Ronnie Lunsford, a local businessman and a task force leader for the 20th annual “Ride for Kids Road Ride”. This event raises money for pediatric brain cancer research at the hospital. Dr. Parsons also discussed the latest in research and techniques.

  • Community Platform - Adopt a Beach 4/22

    The guest was Renee Tuggle, Statewide Coordinator for the “Adopt a Beach Spring Clean-up”. The annual event enlists volunteers to clean Texas beaches from Beaumont to the Mexican border. Renee told the audience how they can help as over 10 thousand volunteers will participate.

  • Community Platform - Crime Stoppers 4/15

    The guest was Katherine Cabaniss, Executive Director of CrimeStoppers. The issues we discussed included the 6th annual “Safe Child Initiative” a program that asks for the public's help in getting sex offenders off the street. In 5 years 196 predators have been captured. We also discussed child internet safety and gave tips to parents on keeping the kids safe.

  • Community Platform - Friendship Center 4/8

    The guests were Beth Michel, Grant Compliance Officer and Crystal Sumner, Volunteer Coordinator for the Friendship Center with primary offices in Conroe. The non-profit center provides much needed services to the senior citizens of Montgomery County, including meals on wheels, 6 activity centers, and free medical transportation.

  • Community Platform - Texas Parks and Wildlife 4/8

    The guest was Diana Foss, Wildlife Biologist for the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. The issues we discussed included last year's drought and this year's spring rains and its effect of wildlife in and around the Houston area. We also discussed “Bat Fest” which will be held April 14th and 15th. We also discussed poisonous snakes, possums, raccoons, deer and the return of the black bear population to east Texas.

  • Community Platform - HMNS Titanic

    The guest was Amanda Norris, Curator for the Titanic Exhibit now on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the fabled ship in the icy waters of the north Atlantic. Amanda and I discussed the events leading up to the sinking and the subsequent aftermath that left about two-thirds of the passengers dead. We also discussed the artifacts on the display at the museum.

  • Community Platform - Justice for Children 4/1

    The guests were Randy Burton, Founder and Janet Lachman, Executive Director for Justice for Children, a non-profit dedicated to the rights of children, especially in abuse cases. The issues we discussed included the upcoming Children's Constitutional Rights Conference in Boston and the international Children's Conference in Wales. We also discussed cps and law enforcements role in abuse cases, the cost of child abuse to taxpayers and we gave a plug to a May fundraiser for the agency.

    The guests were Alicia Barron, Manager of Program Services for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Ron Brannigan, a person with the disease and an active rider for many years in the BP MS 150, a bike ride from Houston to Austin benefitng MS. The issues we discussed included this year's ride, ongoing research and the symptoms of the disease.

  • Community Platform - Shell Open 3/25

    The guest was Steve Timms, President and CEO of the Houston Golf Association. The issues we discussed included the Shell Houston open which will begin later this week. We talked about defending champion Phil Mickelson along with the rest of the impressive field and the economic impact the PGA has on the city. We also discussed the millions in charity dollars raised by the event. The HGA has generated over 55 million dollars for local charities since 1974.

  • Community Platform - City Manager for the city of Lake Jackson 3/25

    The guest was Bill Yenni, City Manager for the city of Lake Jackson, Texas, the city of license for the eagle. The issues we discussed included downtown renovation projects, an increase in sales tax revenue for the city, the role of city manager and the relationship with the school district. We also discussed the Oklahoma pipeline which will carry product to the gulf coast.

  • Community Platform - We Co-Dependent Men" 3/18

    The guests were Ken P. and Bob T., Authors of the book “We Co-Dependent Men”, a book about substance abuse. It focuses primarily on men who enable their loved ones. The primary issue discussed was enabling. Remember, behind every substance abuser is someone who unwittingly aids the user. Both Ken and Bob shared their personal stories. Ken lost his wife to alcoholism and Bob lost his daughter to a cocaine overdose.

    The guest was Dan Parsons, President of the Houston Chapter of the Better Business Bureau. The issues we discussed included seasonal spring scams, like roofing repairs and lawn care. We also discussed the Continental/United merger and the proposed new auto ordinance.

    The guest was Cameron Ballentyne, Director of Communications for the Houston area Red Cross. March is “Red Cross” month and we discussed how the agency responds to disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires and other natural disasters. We also discussed safety classes such as water safety and CPR classes and volunteerism in the community.

  • Community Platform - Neighborhood Tax Center

    The guests were Allison Townsend, Assistant Director of Tax Centers and Marcus Grisby, a Volunteer Tax Preparer for the Neighborhood Tax Centers, a non-profit which prepares tax returns free of charge to individuals and families with incomes below 50 thousand dollars. We discussed a variety of new tax laws and the guests encouraged the audience to come in for a free tax preparation.

    The guests were Susie Hanks of the Eagle, a Big Sister, her Little, Marquita, and Cindy Schultz, Executive Director for the Gulf Coast chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The issues we discussed included Susie being nominated for Texas big sister of the year and her 6 year relationship with Marquite. Marquita also spoke of what her big has meant over the years and how the non-profit has given her a new perspective on life. Cindy discussed the need for more volunteers and the nits and bolts of the organization

    The guest was Steve Stevens, Chairman of the Board for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The issues we discussed were everything Rodeo Houston. From the 283 million dollars raised for scholarships over the years, to the concerts, rodeo performers, parking and the livestock we talked about it all.

    The guest was Micah Hirschfield, Vice President of Communications for the Greater Houston Partnership. The issues we discussed included Houston's economy and the fact we are the first major U.S. city to regain all of our jobs from the recession. We also discussed the expansion of the Panama Canal and what that will mean to the Port of Houston in 2014. We also touched on members services.
