Pete Townshend honored. Elton John adding to family. ZZ Top 'Gang of Outlaws' tour. Casual work attire is the norm. Women us cleavage to their advantage. How to get over a breakup. Coffee could make you lazy? Overexposed celebs. 17 things every woman should know how to do in her own home.
PETE TOWNSHEND
Pete Townshend has earned a unique honor by joining the Buddy Holly Guitar Foundation as a recipient artist. Legendary Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson guitarist James Burton posed with Townshend for a photo with his new replica of Buddy Holly's 1943 Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar in London this weekend. The Buddy Holly Guitar Foundation raises money for school music programs by lending to artists -- including Peter Asher, Peter Frampton, Nokie Edwards, Graham Nash, and Jackson Browne -- unique guitars, each bearing one original fret from Buddy's 1943 Gibson J-45.
TheWho.com posted that "Artists are invited to name their favorite Buddy Holly song and a guitar is built in that name. (Townshend) chose 'It's So Easy.' The guitar was built by luthier Tony Klassen."
ELTON JOHN
Elton John and partner David Furnish are making plans to expand their family with a sibling for 15-month-old son, Zachary. A source close to the couple told The Mirror, "The wheels are in motion. David and Elton have never hidden their desire to extend their family, and believe the time is right for another child. By the end of this year, or the beginning of next year, there will be a fourth member of the John-Furnish clan. They are incredibly excited and loving every minute of parenthood."
Although Elton and Furnish, who became civil partners back in 2005, claim both men "contributed" to the process of impregnating Zachary's surrogate mother, Elton is listed at the boy's biological father on his birth certificate. Music-News.com quoted Furnish as saying: "For the time being we don't have a clue who the biological father is. We look at him every day and at the moment he has Elton's nose and my hands."
ZZ TOP
ZZ Top has announced a 25-city road trek billed as the "Gang Of Outlaws Tour" with alt rockers 3 Doors Down and country star Gretchen Wilson. The tour kicks off on May 25th in Manchester, New Hampshire and runs through June 29th in Hinckley, Minnesota. ZZ Top guitarist Billy F. Gibbons told Anti-Music.com: "We're really looking forward to working with the guys from 3 Doors Down and Gretchen too, if we may borrow from the late, great Robert Johnson, clear those stones from the pass way on this phenomenal tour. 'The Gang of Outlaws' is ready to ride!"
Although ZZ Top is known for playing all their major hits every night, Gibbons said that band is always trying to sneak in a few rarities into it's live show: "We covered most of the bases, we pulled out a couple of things. That'll probably remain as part of the presentation. The middle section of the arranged set list has three wildcard slots, and we take turns who's gonna call the first one. So we have to know the catalogue, 165 songs deep, of ZZ Top compositions. It keeps us on our toes, but that's what we enjoy. We still love playing."
The tour is scheduled to be making a stop on June 23 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
CASUAL WORK ATTIRE IS THE NORM
A boom in the number of internet and media-based start-ups over the last decade has led to a generation of staff turning up for work in casual clothes, with one in three claiming they never wear a suit to work. A study of more than 1,000 workers found that 65 percent of office workers admit to wearing jeans to work, with 36 percent claiming they are part of their weekly work wardrobe. More than half of those surveyed (55 percent) admitted they rarely wore a suit to the office. While jeans in the office are a growing trend, 70 percent of workers think that wearing scruffy jeans could in fact hinder your career prospects, with ripped jeans and the latest colored jeans named as the biggest office mistakes. Workers also believe that senior management should take a smarter approach to their work wear with 61 percent thinking it is inappropriate for their boss to wear jeans in the office. (Daily Mail)
WOMEN USE CLEAVAGE TO THEIR ADVANTAGE
In a poll of 1,000 women, one in seven admitted to wearing plunging necklines in the workplace to give their career a boost, while 8 percent said that low-cut tops had helped them escape a parking ticket. Meanwhile half admitted they flashed more flesh in a bid to get served at a bar and more than a quarter - 28 percent - believed a push up bra would help score a date. Overall two thirds reported exposing clothing made them feel sexy and more confident. (Wonderbra)
HERE'S HOW TO GET OVER A BREAKUP
Self-compassion is the most important element in getting over a breakup. Self-compassion is similar to self-esteem, but more measured -- it involves realistic self-perceptions instead of ego-inflated ones, and forgiveness instead of criticism over personal shortcomings. A study in Psychological Science indicated that out of all the personality traits (including optimism, aptitude for relationships, self-esteem and resistance to depression), self-compassion is the single most helpful in rebounding from an emotionally difficult period such as a divorce. The study followed recently divorced participants (with a mean age of 40) and found that those high in self-compassion both recovered sooner from their divorces and felt better than their peers did a few months down the line.
COFFEE COULD MAKE YOU LAZY?
A new study found that coffee's stimulant effect doesn't work on everyone -- in fact, with highly motivated individuals, it can have a reverse effect. The study, conducted on rats, found that caffeine and other stimulants such as amphetamines don't actually raise motivation levels if they already worked hard -- only if they were lazy. When presented with stimulants, the 'slacker' rats that typically avoided challenges worked significantly harder when given amphetamines, while 'worker' rats that typically embraced challenges were less motivated by caffeine or amphetamine. 17 THINGS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW HOW TO DO IN HER OWN HOME (TheFrisky.com)
1. Cook a signature meal that's not toast. Something simple-yet-delicious that you can whip up for guests. Scrambled eggs count but only if you add a little spinach and cheese.
2. Clean up and put everything away in a timely fashion. A place for everything and everything in its place, you know?
3. Change lightbulbs. How many women does it take to change a lightbulb? One. Duh.
4. Flip your own breaker. When the power short-circuits from using your blowdryer and space heater at the same time, you'll be so thankful for this knowledge.
5. Kill a bug and dispose of it. Spider in the bathtub? No problem. Wasp in the living room? Whatever. Cockroach in the kitchen? No worries. You've got this.
6. Plunge your toilet. And fix the chain if it disconnects from the flusher. Gross? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.
7. Fix the vacuum belt. Don't let a minor annoyance like this interrupt a cleaning rampage.
8. Patch a hole in the wall. Have you ever done this before? It's actually really fun. Put on some music and get spacklin'!
9. Hang pictures properly. Become best friends with your level and hammer, and soon there will be less holes to patch (aww, sad).
10. Know what to do if there's a gas leak. You don't need to be able to fix it yourself, but you do need to know who to call.
11. Pay the bills on time. Knowing the due dates and where and how to send payments will help you avoid late fees and feel like a badass business lady.
12. Separate the recycling. Mother Earth thanks you in advance.
13. Reboot the Internet. Seriously, it's so empowering to know how to get your signal back and not rely on condescending advice from the Geek Squad or your nerdy brother.
14. Move a couch or large chair by yourself. Even if it takes you 20 minutes of shove-shove-scootch. Worth it, especially for those 2AM furniture-rearranging urges.
15. Practice grown-up stranger danger techniques. Know what to do when someone you don't know is at the door asking to come in. Trust your gut and stick to your plan.
16. Repair a leaky faucet. Surprisingly easy to fix and totally satisfying to do it yourself.
17. Carve out a space that yours alone. Whether you cohabitate or live alone, whether it's a huge room or a tiny corner, whether you use it for meditating or solo dance parties, every woman needs, as Virginia Woolf put it, "a room of her own." Make sure you create that space for yourself and use it often.
