LED ZEPPELIN

There have been many books written about Led Zeppelin, but a new one called Led Zeppelin: The Oral History Of The World's Greatest Rock Band is said to look at the career of the legendary British quartet in a whole new light. According to Brave Words, author Barney Hoskyns interviewed more than 200 sources for the 576-page book, including Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, the band's late manager Peter Grant and road manager Richard Cole.

  • Hoskyns also spoke with close friends and employees of the band to create a comprehensive portrait through their recollections.
  • The book also features numerous photos of the band both on and off the stage, many of them published for the first time.
  • The book is also said to take a "fresh look" at the band's music, its creative and recording process, its cultural impact and the band's personal lives and highly publicized lifestyles.
  • Led Zeppelin: The Oral History Of The World's Greatest Rock Band will be published on November 6th and is available now for pre-order at Amazon.

BOSTON

Boston is slowly winding down it's summer tour with leader Tom Scholz and new vocalists Tommy DeCarlo and David Victor wowing newcomers and die-hards alike. The band plays tonight (August 31st) in Maryland Heights, Montana.

Scholz, who created the Boston sound with late frontman Brad Delp said that although Boston will live on to both celebrate it's past and new projects -- nothing can replace the sound of Brad Delp's voice: "It was really difficult getting together and playing without him. Y'know, as far as replacing Brad, I mean, Brad was one of the most amazing musician/singer I've ever known and there is, I swear we could spend the rest of our lives trying to find somebody -- there's n obody on the face of this Earth that could replace him and do what he did."

Graham Nash says David Crosby and Stephen Stills are getting along better than they have in decades. The group, who is on tour behind their new live CD/DVD set CSN 2012, are mixing tried and true classics with a smattering of solo favorites, deep album cuts, and a few new songs during their current shows.

Graham Nash, who has always found himself to be the intermediary between his partners, says things are good between the musicians these days and chalks it up to the extra effort Stills is now bringing to live show: "He's singing in tune better, he's playing his guitar better. Crosby is not looking at him on the side of the stage giving him stink eye because he played the wrong note, or sang a wrong note, or whatever the reason. And those two are getting on much better than they ever did."

BOB DYLAN

It was 43 years ago tonight (August 31st, 1969) that Bob Dylan made his first full-length concert appearance in three years at the Isle Of Wight Festival. Dylan's hour-long set with the Band closed the three-day festival, which also featured the Who, Richie Havens, the Moody Blues, Joe Cocker, and a solo set by the Band.

After very little rehearsal, Dylan and the Band took the stage in front of a crowd of an estimated 200,000 people -- including John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. In front of a battery of microphones, a bearded Dylan, clad in a white suit and playing a large Gibson hollow-bodied acoustic guitar, gave an hour-long, spirited performance of 16 songs, spanning his then eight-year career.

Among the songs performed during Dylan and The Band's set were: "She Belongs To Me," "I Threw It All Away," "Maggie's Farm," "It Ain't Me Babe," "Minstrel Boy," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Lay Lady Lay," "To Ramona," "Highway 61 Revisited," "Like A Rolling Stone," "Mighty Quinn," and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35."

The Band's late drummer Levon Helm recalled the show to author Clinton Heylin for his Dylan biography Behind The Shades, saying, "I would've like to have gotten carried away. Bob had an extra list of songs with eight or ten different titles with question marks by them. . . But it seemed like the festival was three days old by then; and so, if everybody else is ready to go home, let's all go."

Columbia Records recorded the shows on a portable eight-track machine, and four of the songs, "She Belongs To Me," "Minstrel Boy," "Like A Rolling Stone," and "The Mighty Quinn," were included on Dylan's 1970 Self Portrait album.

Over the years, the concert has been widely bootlegged from several sources, including the sound from local film crews, crude recordings from audience members, and even a low-generation dub from the Columbia master tape. The concert has long been rumored to be included in an upcoming edition of Dylan's ongoing Bootleg Series collections.

Dylan has gone on record as saying that when he found out about the Woodstock festival taking place near his Saugerties, New York home earlier that month, he snapped up the offer to play the Isle Of Wight Festival to get as far away from the Woodstock crowds that would be looking for him at home.

BLUE MOON TO RISE TONIGHT

If you look up into the sky tonight (August 31st) you'll see a blue moon, which actually has nothing to do with the color of the moon and isn't even that rare, despite the "once in a blue moon" saying. Space.com reported on the history of the term, saying that in 1946, Sky and Telescope magazine traced it to the Maine Farmer's Almanac, where it referred to the third full moon in a season that contains four full moons instead of the usual three. However, Sky and Telescope get the definition wrong, describing a "blue moon" as the second full moon in a month with two full moons. The incorrect meaning didn't became widely used until decades later, and was particularly boosted when the board game Trivial Pursuit used it in 1981. So, under the now commonly-used definition, we'll have a blue moon tonight because it's the second full moon of August, after the first one on August 1st. As for the rarity of blue moons, they're actually not that uncommon, taking place on average once every 2.7 years.

STUDY: LOW-CALORIE DIETS MIGHT NOT PROLONG LIFE AFTER ALL

A new study carried out on rhesus monkeys found that a low-calorie diet didn't prolong life, seemingly contradicting other recent research that has found a restricted diet can lead to a longer lifespan. In the study, which covered 23 years, monkeys that ate 30 percent fewer calories that a control group of monkeys eating a normal diet didn't live any longer, although they were healthier, with lower rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and lower cholesterol in the male monkeys. The study doesn't explain the difference from other research showing a benefit from a restricted-calorie diet.

YOUR CELLPHONE IS DIRTIER THAN YOUR TOILET SEAT

It sounds disgusting, but your cellphone is a lot dirtier than your toilet, carrying 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats. Explaining the reason, University of Arizona microbiologist Charles Gerba told LiveScience.com, "When's the last time you cleaned your cellphone?" While toilets get cleaned frequently because people associate bathrooms with germs, cellphones rarely if ever get a cleaning. However, Gerba said that the amount of germs on a phone isn't the problem, instead it's the sharing of phones between people. If there's no sharing, each phone carries just one set of germs and won't get its owner sick. Other germ hotspot sites that you might not think of named by Gerba include remote controls, office phones, shopping carts and elevator first-floor buttons.

70% OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD SEX DURING THUNDERSTORM

A new study shows the majority of Americans like to have sex when the weather is bad. The survey, by Trojan condoms, asked 1,000 people about their cloudy coitus habits and found that 70 percent have had sex during a thunderstorm or tornado, and seven percent have done it in the middle of a hurricane. And the heat only makes us hotter: Miami residents have sex an average of 102 times a year, while the cold residents of Minneapolis only do it 64 times a year. (LimeLife.com)

TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T GET MARRIED (Daily Mail)

1) Getting married gives your partner free reign to boss you about
2) Getting married because you're 'at that age' is b*******
3) Marriage won't complete you as a person
4) You'll only be with one person for the rest of your life
5) Marriage means endless cleaning up after a man
6) Married couples are more unhappy and dissatisfied sexually
7) You have to change the sheets every other week
8) D.I.V.O.R.C.E.
9) You have to be more caring and sharing
10) You have to share the bed

5 THINGS GUYS SHOULD NOT WEAR THIS FALL (AskMen.com)

A Frumpy Leather Jacket: You know the type: boxy, shapeless, looks like a Hefty bag with a hemline. This may come as a surprise, but leather jackets should fit incredibly close to the body. That's how they keep you warm -- not to mention make you look pretty badass.

Puffer Jackets And Vests: Sure, a feather-filled friend certainly combats the cold. But a puffer can also pack on (imaginary) pounds like some evil autumnal illusion. Nowadays, you can find layering pieces including down jackets and vests that maintain body heat without the bulk. Oh, the wonders of technology.

Sleeveless Hoodies: Jackets sans sleeves don't really make any sense for fall -- or any season for that matter. Is your core cold while your arms are burning up? Yeah, exactly. Invest in the whole hoodie or don't do one at all.

A Deep V-Neck Sweater: Over the last couple of years, your eyes have no doubt been beaten to death by d-bags donning man-cleavage-baring tees. Naturally, this time of year signals a seasonal switch to a similar type of sweater that, despite what the weather would lead you to expect, dips in direct proportion to the temperature. We suggest a more modest V, or, if you just can't resist temptation, a conservative crewneck.

Logo Scarves: You may think a scarf covered in GGs or LVs says, "Hey, I know fashion," but what it's really screaming is, "I like to pimp my body out as a billboard." While there's no shame in doling out dough for pricey pieces, you should make sure your scarf says something about you rather than the company that makes it.
