12-12-12: A CONCERT FOR SANDY RELIEF
The Rolling Stones are the latest band to sign on to perform at Wednesday's (December 12th) 12-12-12: A Concert For Sandy Relief. The Stones join a veritable list of rock's who's who, with co-headliners Paul McCartney, the Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Bon Jovi, Dave Grohl, and Eddie Vedder, among others. The show, which is expected to be seen by over two billion people, comes only three days before the Stones' own pay-per-view special on December 15th, which will catch the band live in concert at Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center.
Mick Jagger feels that after playing to such enormous crowds over the Stones career, the typical 20,000-seat arenas have turned into the small scale type shows the band actually prefers: "Well, I think a stadium show has to be a massive show because you can't really see that much. You have to have the most massive video, you have to have lots of stuff and keep the whole thing going. I mean, to me, a very good arena show -- if it's a good arena -- is relatively intimate. So, you're able to hold the audience, hopefully, without any kind of gimmicks. I mean, of course, it'll be fun to have a few. It's not really about that to me."
FLEETWOOD MAC
Lindsey Buckingham says that Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie burned some bridges when she quit the band back in 1998. Buckingham, who'll be on board when the band kicks off its first tour in over three years on April 4th in Columbus, Ohio, spoke about McVie's departure, telling CBS, "I would be shocked if she ever expressed any interest to do anything with us. Shocked and pleased. She ended up getting a divorce, she ended up selling her house in L.A., she moved back to England, she quit the band, she sold her publishing."
He went on to say: "She didn't necessarily have to burn as many bridges as she did. Everyone sometimes wonders whether or not there might have been more of a middle ground for her to strike, not necessarily in terms of her staying in Fleetwood Mac. But she just wanted to reinvent herself. She seems to want to lead the antithesis of the life she led before, and I don't pretend to understand such a radical change but it was obviously something she needed."
Stevie Nicks said that she still deeply misses McVie on the road: "Well, it's certainly not as much fun as having Chris. Because when I had her, I had a best friend, y'know? Since 1975 I had somebody who I considered to be one of my several girlfriends that are my best friends. And so, when she left, it was really devastating. (The tour in) 2009 was less strange, because she's been gone a long time then. She left in 1998, so in 2009 she'd been gone almost 10 years."
Lindsey Buckingham says that he didn't feel as though losing Christine McVie really affected the band that much in practical terms: "I don't think anyone felt that that was a negative, y'know? I mean, in the spirit of Fleetwood Mac reinventing itself, we saw it -- yes, it was a challenge, but it was also an opportunity to flex our muscles in a different way."
AEROSMITH
Joe Perry says that Aerosmith's new Music From Another Dimension album could be the band's last. While talking to Noisecreep, Perry spoke about the recent release, explaining, "We knew we had another record in us, despite what many said, and I make no bones about it, I don't know if we're gonna make another record."
He addressed the fact that over the past few years tensions between the bandmembers reached a fever pitch: "Our disagreements are what make us dynamic. If we all thought the same way, nothing good would happen, but even after we argue, we don't take it home. It's one of the things that allowed us to get back together. We'll argue things to death, but we deal with it, figure it out and move on. There's too much life out there to waste time being like kids in high school. We had a meeting yesterday over a video, it got really heated, but then went down to look at Steven's motorcycle. All was fine. Then it was like, what are you doing tonight?"
Perry was pressed as to how Music From Another Dimension stacks up against other Aerosmith albums: "In order to compare you have to not like something else. So I'll pick what I don't like and work my way up. I really didn't like Done With Mirrors. I really didn't like Just Push Play. Then there are other records I really think we're good for their time, like Toys (In The Attic) and Rocks. I still listen to those and I put this one in that category of a record I will continue to listen to a lot. I can't get enough of this one."
Joe Perry says that even taking their already 40-year-career into account -- there's no reason that Aerosmith can't be rocking onstage for decades still to come: "I think that the band has to look at what it takes to do this gracefully. There's no reason why the band can't keep playing until we can't walk. There's just no reason. You just have to know that you can't do certain things anymore. Y'know, you can't do somersaults on stage, you can't do, y'know, swing from ropes. But there are other things you can do that are just as entertaining -- like sing, play."
CAN BEER FIGHT VIRUSES?
Could drinking spuds help protect you from catching a cold this winter? A new study cited by Sapporo Breweries, which operates out of Tokyo, Japan, says the compound humulone, found in beer, is effective in fighting against respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. RSV can cause pneumonia and bronchitis in infants and children, and cold-like symptoms in adults. There is a catch though - the amount of humulone found in beer is so small that a person would have to drink about 30-cans of beer to get its protective effect. (Fox News)
COULD CHOCOLATE HAVE THE SAME EFFECTS AS VIAGRA?
A Swiss-chocolate maker is claiming it might be possible to create a "turbo-charged chocolate" which would act like an erectile dysfunction drug when eaten. The chocolate-maker, Barry Callebaut, says that when chocolate is produced, cocoa flavanols are usually removed, but that the flavanols help maintain normal blood flow in the body. Viagra works with chemicals that produce the same reaction in the body, only in a more targeted way. Callebaut says this could mean men will be swapping little blue pills for chocolate in the future. IN 2014 YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO TEXT 9-1-1 YOUR EMERGENCY
The Federal Communication Commission, or F-C-C, says four major U.S. mobile service carriers have set up a service to allow people to send text messages to the emergency call center 9-1-1. The FCC says AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile are expected to have the service available nationwide by May of 2014. The change is expected to help people with hearing or speech disabilities in particular. For now, the only way to reach 9-1-1 emergency services is via a phone call. (Reuters)
THE SURPRISING THING THAT COULD GET YOU HIRED
Researchers from Northwestern University asked 120-professionals at law practice, banks, and consulting firms what qualities they value most when looking to hire someone. Over half the time, employers said the valued "cultural fit." This translates into how well you fit with the company's energy or how well you get along with the interviewer. The study's lead author, Lauren Rivera, Ph.D., says this is due to a psychological effect termed "merit is me," which means most employers assume they are the model of the ideal candidate, so they look for candidates who are most like themselves. HOW TO RECEIVE A GIFT YOU HATE GRACEFULLY(Your Tango):
1) Smile. It's likely your face will try to betray you, so mind your expression. Somewhere in that man's brain, he really did think you'd lovingly wear a long chain necklace that looks like it has a magnifying glass attached. Maybe he thought you'd use it for reading; you love reading! Thus, because you adore him (even if you don't adore his gift), you've got to grin and bear it.
2) Use the gift in a sentence. Pretend you're at a spelling bee and, in order to fully comprehend the reasoning behind the present, you've got to give a real-life example of its use. "A magnifying-glass necklace! Never know when the print will be too small to read and your glasses won't be handy." This type of exercise may also help you determine why your partner chose the gift in the first place.
3) Determine when to put it to use. When grandma got you an ugly holiday sweater, you wore it to her house then tucked it away in the depths of your closet. Same rule applies here. Because hey, you do love your partner, and you can learn to love a necklace that matches absolutely nothing in your closet , right?
4) Try to be gentle. For those brave souls who find it impossible not to say "Ehhh" aloud upon unwrapping, try to be gentle. Take the above rules and apply them to your situation while explaining just why the gift doesn't work: "Honey, thank you for the necklace. It's very pretty - but it's just not me." Throw in the fact that you value his time and money: I don't want your money to be wasted on something I'll only wear once or twice." If he can handle it, go ahead and tease him about it. "I could wear it with turtlenecks or on spy adventures, but I don't really own any turtlenecks and the CIA hasn't called me for work in months."
5) Drop some hints next time. Mostly importantly, make sure to set the stage for a much improved gift next year by dropping blatant hints in the months leading up to next year's holiday season. And don't forget; you get what you give. Listening to his little clues and getting him an exceptional present is bound to do wonders for your gift karma.
