Remembering Jim Morrison. Van Halen tour update. Beatles produced documentary due in September. Jagger's pink and purple suit. Styx's JY feels like he's in his 20's on stage. Kiss' "Hell or Hallelujah". Telecommuters watch TV while "working". Top 10 lies men tell.
JIM MORRISON
It was 41 years ago today (July 3rd, 1971) that Jim Morrison was found dead in the bathtub of his apartment in Paris, France by his longtime companion, Pamela Courson. The local coroner ruled the official cause of death for the 27-year-old Doors frontman as "heart attack induced by respiratory problems." Morrison was buried in Paris's Pere Lachaise Cemetery on July 9th of that year.
Steve Harris, the senior VP at the time of the Doors' record label Elektra Records revealed what he knows about Morrison's death: "It was heroin. So they bring Jim home and he's dead. And they put him in the bathtub and there's a knock on the door. Pam goes and opens the door. You know who it is -- Marianne Faithfull. She saw what was going on and she split."
In December 2010 Florida's outgoing Governor Charlie Crist cleared Morrison's name just one day after what would've been his 67th birthday (December 8th) for his 1969 indecent exposure conviction in Miami. The surviving Doors -- Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Krieger -- who have long maintained that Morrison did not expose himself, said in a statement that Morrison had nothing to be pardoned for in the first place. They also said that an apology -- not a pardon -- would have been more appropriate "40 years after the fact."
Although Morrison's freedom, livelihood, and reputation were on the line during the trial, Morrison viewed the whole process as an attack on an artist's first amendment rights, as he explained at the time to NBC News: "(Jim Morrison) I think that nudity is really a cyclical phenomena. I think it comes, it gets very liberal and extreme, and it goes back, reacts the other way and just seems to be a cycle in entertainment. (Reporter) In other words, you feel the same liberalism performed in the theater -- in acting -- should also be generated in music. (Morrison) Well, in the realm of art and theater, I do think that there should be complete freedom for the artists and the performer. I'm not personally convinced that, uh, nudity is always a necessary part of, y'know, a play or a film, but the artist should be free to use it."
Ray Manzarek said that he hopes people will start to eventually see beyond Morrison's "Lizard King" persona and grow a deeper understanding of the Doors' music: "Y'know, it's a worship of Morrison -- I understand that. Y'know, he's dead. It's like James Dean, y'know -- except James Dean stood alone, so you could worship James Dean. But, I mean, Jim was part of a band. The band was called the Doors. Listen to the music, man. The people who worship Jim Morrison so insanely, I don't even think they know the words, y'know? It's just the image of Jim."
Manzarek feels that much of Morrison's rebellious streak emanated from the rigid and icy relationship he shared with his parents. He said that in the ensuing years following Morrison's death, he never had any interest in ever meeting the man who fathered the Doors' legendary frontman: "I never met his father. I never met the man. The man, as far as I was concerned, is what Jim said about him in an interview -- 'Tell us about your parents' -- 'My parents are dead.' Jim did say that his father was a roaring sort of man. A small man, a short man, but a huge roar, which he would lay onto his children. He said, 'We had to call him 'sir' at home and we had to call mother 'ma'am.' So he never got to call him 'dad,' or 'daddy' or 'mommy' or 'mom' -- it was always 'ma'am' -- Yes 'ma'am,' yes 'sir.'"
Robbie Krieger says that looking back on the Doors short career with Morrison, he's surprised at how well the foursome always seemed to gel: "It was really like the perfect group, y'know, as far as working together and stuff. There was no ego problems, y'know, and petty jealousies and stuff like that that a lot of groups go through."
John Densmore told us that he believes that the Doors were far greater than their individual creative parts: "Some kind of magic came into a garage in Venice in 1966 that was bigger than all of us. It's not us. It's something that came through us. The multicultural ingredients that each of us brought struck me. I mean, we're all white guys, but Ray with his Chicago youth and the blues and classical music, and then Robby was all hung up on Flamingo and folk music, and I was into jazz, and Jim had read every book on the planet -- that's a melting pot; That's America. Look at those ingredients. And it worked!"

VAN HALEN
Van Halen has now officially canceled the 31 North American tour dates it initially postponed in May, according to Pollstar.com. Although the band itself has not confirmed the cancellations, Pollstar reported that Ticketmaster was listing all shows after June 26th as canceled, with refunds now available at the point of purchase. The shows, which were supposed to begin on July 7th, included stops in Baltimore, Detroit, Memphis, Sacramento, Reno and Milwaukee.
The fact that the shows have now been scrapped completely, as opposed to just postponed to a later date, will probably fuel another round of speculation about the future of the band and its internal relationships.
Both singer David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen denied rumors that they were fighting again on the road, with fatigue and an over-ambitious schedule given as the reasons for curtailing the group's live work.
Eddie told USA Today last month that the band will resume touring in November with shows in Japan, adding, "In the new year, we'll possibly do something special, but I can't talk about it." The group is also said to be a top contender to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in early 2013.
Eddie also told Guitar World in a new interview that the band intends to stick around for a while, saying, "It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has . . . We're all very opinionated about things, but it's all for the benefit of the music."
The band has been supporting its new album, A Different Kind Of Truth, Van Halen's first album in 14 years and first with Roth since 1984.
THE BEATLES
Coming to DVD, Blu-ray and digital video on September 11th is the career spanning documentary Produced By George Martin. The doc about the Beatles' legendary producer first aired last year as part of Britain's Arena TV series and features new and exclusive interviews with surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr -- both of whom met Martin 50 years ago last month. Among the other notables appearing Produced By George Martin are Michael Palin, Jeff Beck, Rolf Harris, and Cilla Black. The new DVD version contains over 50 minutes of additional interviews not included in the TV broadcast version, including contributions from producers Rick Rubin and T-Bone Burnett, songwriter Jimmy Webb and Beatles engineer Ken Scott.
George Martin's final work before retiring was crafting the soundtrack for Beatles' 2006 Cirque du Soleil LOVE production and soundtrack. He composed his final score for hire to accompany George Harrison's 1968 demo for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which was officially released in 1996 on The Beatles Anthology 3 collection: "The song itself, on the Anthology is a demo and then someone had the idea of asking me to write a score of this demo. And this was a bit of a shock for me, because I never thought I'd be writing a score for George long after he died. And also with (his wife) Olivia listening to it, I had to write something that she would like, as well as something the show would like. And anyway, we did it, she came to the session and I could see by the look on her face she approved it, so that was okay, and everyone seemed to think that it worked very well."
MICK JAGGER
Mick Jagger couldn't help but steal the spotlight at his second oldest daughter's wedding on Saturday (June 30th), according to Reuters. The Rolling Stones frontman wore a purple and pink pinstriped suit as he walked his daughter, 40-year-old jewelry designer Jade Jagger down the aisle at her wedding to DJ Adrian Fillary at Aynhoe Park, "a grand 17th Century Palladian house set in 250 acres near Banbury in Oxfordshire, England." Also in attendance was Jagger's main squeeze L'Wren Scott, along with Jagger's two ex-wives, Jade's mother, Bianca Jagger and Jerry Hall. Jagger performed at one point during the festivities, tackling the Stones' 1969 classic, "You Can't Always Get What You Want."
Jade's two daughters 20-year-old Assisi, 20, and 17-year-old Amba, 17, served as bridesmaids, while model Kate Moss' nine-year-old daughter Lila Grace was the flower girl.
Jagger, who's always maintained very strong family ties -- both with his brother and parents along with his various exes and kids -- says that he's not the superstar showman that people believe him to be at all times:"Sometimes people find it hard to understand that you could be all these things (laughs) at once. And people put their own image on you, y'know, like they do on any actor or actress or any other popular figure. They put their own idea on you. And that's what you're for, just a personal interpretation."
IN OTHER STONES NEWS
Last night (July 2nd), Keith Richards and daughter Alexandra were on hand at Manhattan's Iridium Club to catch Charlie Watts' early show with his solo ensemble the A, B, C & D Of Boogie Woogie. Although Keith stayed seated at his table and didn't sit in, he enjoyed a hero's welcome upon entering and clearly enjoyed the boogie woogie music and drinks.
Out now is the A, B, C & D Of Boogie Woogie's concert collection, Live In Paris. The album was recorded over several nights in September 2010 at Paris' Duc Des Lombards jazz club. The setlist is a mix of originals, improvisations, along with blues and boogie woogie standards. Highlights on the collection include "Down The Road A Piece," "St. Louis Blues," and "Route 66."
STYX
Guitarist J.Y. Young, the sole remaining founding member of Styx still touring with the band, says that in many ways, the group still feels like their in their '20s, Young, who's now 62 and leads the band with guitarists Tommy Shaw, admits that the trial and the tribulations of traveling on tour are the times that the band feels their age. Styx is currently out on the road with fellow Midwesterners REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent.
Young was asked if his time with Styx feels more like 400 years rather than the 40: "When I've had a 24-hour travel day, it does feel like 400 years, but then after I've played the 90-minutes or the one hundred and fifteen minutes we do, or whatever it is, it's sort of like it started yesterday. And it's as wonderful as it ever was. There's no sort of magic potion, like being onstage with this band and God bless and rest John Panozzo's soul, our original drummer who was just a monster behind the drums, but Todd Sucherman is like having a new engine under the hood of this race car and I like taking this thing out for a drive."
KISS
Kiss has released "Hell Or Hallelujah" -- the lead single of their upcoming 20th album, Monster. The album, which is the band's first original studio set since 2009's Sonic Boom, is the second to feature their latest lineup of Gene Simmons on bass, Paul Stanley on rhythm guitar, Eric Singer on drums, and lead guitarist Tommy Thayer. The album is expected out sometime this fall.
Gene Simmons was quoted by Vintage Vinyl News as saying about Monster: "There are no symphony orchestras, boy choirs, keyboards, outside producers or songwriters on this album. The best thing we did was to turn inwards to ourselves. Tommy and Eric have revitalized this band, with a work ethic and the talent to back it up. This is a real band effort. KISS has become a behemoth. We're going where no bands have gone before."
Simmons admitted that he knows some people want to see original bandmembers Peter Criss and Ace Frehley back in the Kiss, but says that the concept is inaccurate: "There's no question that there's a core of fans -- five-10 percent, my sense is -- who believe in original members. And yet, when you look at original members, the Beatles are not original members -- Ringo (Starr) is not an original member; the Stones -- barely. You know, they've had so many members come and go, but it's the Stones, and AC/DC's aren't original members, and Van Halen, and Journey... you go down the list of every -- almost every band you can think of."
TELECOMMUTERS WATCH TV WHILE 'WORKING'
Business Week has revealed what telecommuters really go while working from home. A new survey found that, while on the clock:
TOP 10 LIES MEN TELL (Cosmopolitan)
Lie # 10: "I'm Stuck in Traffic"
"He figures it's much easier to just say this than to try to explain the real reason he's running late," says John Amodeo, author of The Authentic Heart. "Remember, men aren't as good at communicating as women are." The funny thing is, a guy will toss this line out even if what held him up is perfectly legitimate. Still, you shouldn't let it slide - it's a lie nonetheless.
Lie # 9: "It Wasn't That Expensive"
"Men like toys, and they don't like sensing your disapproval, even if you don't share a bank account," Amodeo says. He could also be dropping this fib to try to prove he's responsible with money, says Barton Goldsmith, author of Emotional Fitness for Intimacy. "He doesn't want you to think that if you do share funds down the line, he's going to blow them all on things like plasma TVs."
Lie # 8: "I'm on My Way"
Guys usually throw you this line when you're making them meet you at some event they don't want to attend - like, say, your family reunion. He's stalling, but he's also being pouty. Consider: He can't exactly refuse to go without enduring serious repercussions from you, and he can't very well throw a temper tantrum in front of your pop-pop. So saying this and then showing up late is his way of gaining a wee amount of control.
Lie # 7:"I Didn't Have Too Much to Drink"
This lie could point to a serious problem - and we're not just talking about your relationship. If he says it often he could have an alcohol issue, Goldsmith says. You need to talk to him about how concerned you are, but watch the timing. "That's definitely a conversation you need to have when he's sober," Amodeo adds.
Lie # 6: "Sorry, I Missed Your Call,"
Lie # 5: "My Battery Died," and
Lie # 4: "I Had No Signal"
These three lines all mean the same thing: I screened your call. Why? "Often men will feed you these lies because they're afraid to tell you to back off a bit, that they need a little alone time," Amodeo says. You might want to ease up on the checking in and let him miss you more.
Lie # 3: "No, Your Butt Doesn't Look Big in That"
Look, if you assail him with the question in the first place, you're really just asking to be thrown this all-purpose mollifier. "Every guy has a buddy who's told him, 'I answered this question wrong once, and my girlfriend wouldn't have sex with me for a year,' " Goldsmith says. This is the one safe response he knows, so there's no way he's going to risk the worst by straying from it. If you want an honest opinion, go ask one of your girls instead.
Lie # 2:"This Will Be My Last Beer"
Our experts say this man-lie delivered over the phone means he wants to get you off ASAP so he can spend more time with his buddies. The thing is, even if he says it three times in a night, each time he believes it, Goldsmith says. It's like when you vow this will be your last cookie...five times in a row.
Lie # 1: "Nothing's Wrong, I'm Fine"
A whopping 52 percent of men have told their girlfriend this line. According to experts, this go-to fib is all about avoiding drama and protecting male pride. Men know they're not as good with articulating what's happening or how they're feeling, so it's easier for them to just keep you out of the situation. Next time he uses this line, give him a couple days and then ask him again if he is still bummed...and why. By then he may have figured things out.
Thanks for listening to The Eagle while you work. Keep it fabulous, Houston!
