The Beatles back on top. Charlie Watts talks tour. World's Best Sporting Songs. Springsteen tour. Music has gotten blander and louder. 5 things you didn't know about sex at the Olympics. Great American male survey part 1.
THE BEATLES
The Beatles are back on top with their new iTunes-only release, Tomorrow Never Knows, sitting at Number One in iTunes charts in the U.S. and eight other countries. Billboard is predicting that the compilation will have sold up to 15,000 units -- which once again will propel the "Fab Four" back into the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 charts. EMI, the Beatles' record label, announced that in addition to the U.S., Tomorrow Never Knows has topped the iTunes charts in Canada, Portugal, Greece, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.
Tomorrow Never Knows is being geared to the 20 to 30-something generation, in an attempt to showcase the Beatles' more "indie"-style, cutting edge recordings. In addition to the new digital album, the 1968 promo film for "Hey Bulldog" is available free to stream or purchase via the iTunes Store.
The tracklisting for the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows is: "Revolution," "Paperback Writer," "And Your Bird Can Sing," "Helter Skelter," "Savoy Truffle," "I'm Down," "I've Got A Feeling," "Back In The U.S.S.R.," "You Can't Do That," "It's All Too Much," "She Said, She Said," "Hey Bulldog," "Tomorrow Never Knows," and "The End."
Ringo Starr said he's more than happy to talk about the Beatles because he's still proud of the work they left behind: "Because it's part of the life, it's part of the heritage. I'm not going to hide from it, it's just that's what it was and we were the best band in the land. And what is great for me with the music we made was that it's still relevant. The kids are still buying the music. You can download us now, we're trying to modernize. The music is what's important -- not the haircuts."
Paul McCartney biographer Christopher Sanford maintains that it was McCartney above all the other Beatles that was open to push the creative boundaries within the group: "Paul was way more 'out there' than John Lennon was. In '66, '67 when they were doing Revolver -- and of course, Sgt. Pepper -- it was Paul who was coming into the studio with tape loops and saying 'Let's put on these sounds like seagulls shrieking.' And John looked at him (laughs) and said, 'Well, what's that?' George Harrison was the straightest guy in the world when it came to pop music. He had no time for anything left-field -- other than the occasional experimentation with his sitar. He liked good old-fashioned pop songs. So, Paul was the guy who was saying, 'Y'know, we can take this to a new direction.'"
ROLLING STONES
While Rolling Stones fans are chomping at the bit for any news regarding the band's upcoming 50th anniversary dates -- Charlie Watts seems to want the shows to be kept at a minimum. Watts joked to NME, "The tours are two years long, so I'm living with Ronnie Wood for all that time. I don't need to see him for another two years. In the mid-'60s, the tours would be a trip around England, then a trip around America, then recording in America, back to Europe, England, to America. You were living together the whole time. You'd get a month off at the most."
Watts, who's renown for his dry wit, went on to deadpan: "You were younger though, and also you were more photogenic, to be honest. I don't think Keith (Richards) would want you photographing him at two in the morning now."
Mick Jagger, who earlier this month revealed that the Stones would be back onstage sometime this fall, plans out all the band's stage logistics with Charlie Watts. He told us that the type of venue has always dictated how many bells and whistles get added to the show: "It depends where you're touring. So, in the early-'60s, we were playing in theaters, y'know, people don't do a tremendous amount of all that stuff. I mean, it was going on in the '60s, that's where it all started, I mean, there was a lot of that. But y'know, we'd go and play a theater show there's very little. . . so I think in the Circus Krone show (in Munich) I shouldn't think there'd be very much pyrotechnics. But, if you're playing in the big stadium, you've got to do something visual. I don't think you could just go on, y'know."
WORLD's BEST SPORTING SONGS
Van Halen's "Jump" has topped a poll of the world's best sporting songs just as the 2012 Olympics get underway in London. According to Classic Rock, music rights organization PRS For Music held a vote among its members to pick the top songs that have been adopted for sporting events, with the Top 20 also including tracks from the Rolling Stones, Queen, the Beatles, House Of Pain, Tina Turner and Journey.
"Jump" appeared on Van Halen's sixth studio album, 1984, which was released on December 31st, 1983. It was the last Van Halen record until this year to feature singer David Lee Roth.
In fact, "Jump" may have played a role in Roth's exit, since at the time he was reportedly unhappy with the heavy use of synthesizers on the song. Nevertheless, "Jump" went to Number One and became Van Halen's biggest hit.
Roth rejoined the group in 2007 for a hugely successful reunion tour, and the band released a new record, A Different Kind Of Truth, earlier this year.
The top 20 sporting tracks (according to a poll by PRS For Music):
1. "Jump" - Van Halen
2. "Start Me Up" - Rolling Stones
3. "Higher And Higher" - Jackie Wilson
4. "Gold" - Spandau Ballet
5. "Thriller" - Michael Jackson
6. "Wake Me Up!" - Wham!
7. "The Winner Takes It All" - ABBA
8. "Silver Machine" - Hawkwind
9. "We Are The Champions" - Queen
10. "Shine" - Take That
11. "Tracks Of My Tears" - Smokey Robinson
12. "The Long And Winding Road" - The Beatles
13. "Eye Of The Tiger" - Survivor
14. "Simply The Best" - Tina Turner
15. "Jump Around" - House Of Pain
16. "Gonna Fly Now" - Bill Conti (theme from Rocky)
17. "Another One Bites the Dust" - Queen
18. "Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey
19. "Chariots of Fire Theme" - Vangelis3
20. "We Will Rock You" - Queen
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street have announced a 16-date string of North American shows for this fall. The arena trek, which will follow "The Boss" late summer stadium swing, will kick off on October 19th at Ottawa, Ontario's Scotiabank Place and wind down just under seven weeks later on December 6th at Glendale, Arizona's Jobing.com Arena. Additional stops seem likely to be added, with only four shows on the books for the first half of November and five for the second half of the month. Springsteen and the band wrap up their European leg tomorrow night (July 31st) in Helsinki, Finland.
Drummer Max Weinberg has been part of the E Street Band since 1974 and has seen Springsteen transform from an East Coast cult artist into a superstar before his eyes: ["Well, I should say I've seen him become more intense than ever. And as a person, well, I think all of us have changed. You can't help but be changed by the Born In The U.S.A. tour, for example. The widespread acceptance of that record and that tour. Y'know, it was a struggle. For Bruce it was a 20-year struggle. I guess I could characterize him as, when you look at Bruce, you see a guy with a lot of piece of mind."] SOUNDCUE (:23 OC: . . . piece of mind)
MUSIC HAS GOTTEN BLANDER AND LOUDER
Music as a whole today has apparently gotten blander -- but it is louder. Joan Serra, a researcher at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Research at the National Research Council, said a computer analysis was performed on songs from a public database of more than 1 million songs recorded from 1955 to 2010, and the latest songs have a "lower diversity of timbres, tend to be interpreted with the same instruments and follow predictable paths." Serra said in a statement, "These musical parameters in the songs are like the words of a text and found that there are fewer different words." In the 1960s, there was more experimentation with chords, rhythm and instrumentation. However, the songs today are louder. (UPI)
5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SEX AT THE OLYMPICS (TresSugar.com)
There's an unofficial condom sponsor. At this year's London games, British-owned Durex will be providing the tens of thousands of free condoms at the Olympic Village. But don't expect the brand to advertise that connection, like Coca-Cola or McDonald's would. Durex didn't put down $1.6 billion to become an official sponsor, so it can't.
The condoms are branded. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Olympians were given condoms covered with the games' motto: "Faster, Higher, Stronger." Very fitting. Sport-specific condoms -- for, say, curling -- have also appeared.
There are "days of glory." An anonymous female Olympian told the New York Post that the days following competition are dubbed Days of Glory. Once athletes are finished with their sports, some take part in partying and hooking up.
McDonald's makes breakfast the morning after. According to the Post's source, after a night of drinking and sleeping together, Olympians hit up McDonald's at 4:30 a.m. for breakfast.
Condoms run out -- but not for the reason you think they do. Apparently 70,000 condoms weren't enough to hold over Olympians at the 2000 games in Sydney. But that's not because the athletes were having marathon sex sessions. Todd Lodwick, a former American Nordic combined gold-medalist skier, says, "It's a tradition -- taking so many that they have to replace them." They also make great souvenirs.
