GEORGE HARRISON
It was 11 years ago today (November 29th, 2001) that George Harrison died after a long battle with cancer, at age 58. Harrison, the first of the Beatles to embrace Eastern philosophies and culture, will also be remembered for his humanitarian efforts, such as his 1971 Concert For Bangladesh for famine relief. On September 15th, the Martin Scorsese HBO documentary George Harrison: Living In The Material World snagged two awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony held at L.A.'s Nokia Theatre. The critically acclaimed doc won the prizes for Outstanding Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming.
Following Harrison's death, an obviously distraught Paul McCartney met the press outside his Sussex, England home and spoke lovingly about his original friend in the Beatles: "He was a lovely man, I love him dearly. I grew up with him and I like to remember all the great times we had together in Liverpool and with the Beatles and ever since, really. Great sense of humor -- I was lucky enough to see him a couple of weeks ago and he was still laughing and joking. Very brave man, and I'm just privileged to have known him, and I love him like he's my brother. It's a very sad day for me and for a lot of people, but I think he would have wanted us to get on and be loving and remember him as the great man he was."
After the Beatles split in 1970, Harrison's solo career kicked off with the Number One hit "My Sweet Lord" and the Number One album All Things Must Pass. He was also responsible for organizing 1971's The Concert For Bangladesh, which was the first major rock fundraiser, which paved the way for countless other music-supported benefits over the years.
Harrison wrote such Beatles classics as "Don't Bother Me," "I Need You," "You Like Me Too Much," "Think For Yourself," "If I Needed Someone," "Taxman," "I Want To Tell You," "Love You To," "Within You, Without You," "Blue Jay Way," "It's Only A Northern Song," "It's All Too Much," "The Inner Light," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Piggies" "Long, Long, Long," "Savoy Truffle," "I Me Mine," "For You Blue," "Old Brown Shoe," "Something," and "Here Comes The Sun," among others.
Other solo hits included "What Is Life," "Bangla Desh," "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)," "Dark Horse," "You," "This Song," "Crackerbox Palace," "Blow Away," "All Those Years Ago," and his 1987 comeback single "Got My Mind Set On You," which is the last solo Number One single by any former Beatle to date.
In 1971, Harrison produced Ringo Starr's initial solo singles "It Don't Come Easy" and "Back Off Boogaloo," as well also co-writing Starr's first Number One hit "Photograph" with him in 1973.
Shortly after his return to the spotlight in 1987, Harrison co-founded the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. In 1991 he undertook a brief tour of Japan with Eric Clapton and his band.
His widow Olivia Harrison has led a successful reissue campaign of the Harrison solo catalogue, including a recent box set of the Traveling Wilburys material. An upcoming collection featuring highlights of Harrison's sole North American solo tour from 1974 is said to be in the works for the near future. Olivia also served as the executive producer for the Living In The Material World documentary.
ERIC CLAPTON/ROLLING STONES
Eric Clapton will join the Rolling Stones on stage tonight (November 29th) during the second and final "50 And Counting" UK show at London's O2 Arena. The Stones also announced that Florence & The Machine front-woman Florence Welch will also be joining the band on stage. There's no word as to whether former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor will also be making cameos as they did during last week's kick-off to the band's latest string of dates.
Eric Clapton said that he's come to view Keith Richards and the Stones the way he thought about the groundbreaking early bluesmen: "Well, he said a lot of great things and I read some great interviews where he said all he wanted to do was grow up with this thing, instead of, y'know, leaving it as though it was part of his adolescence (and) grow up with it. And I think that's really an important attitude to have. And I think it caught with the rest of them and I see they're all such great musicians, I don't think they really counted themselves as that before. And in this day and age when the musician is actually a dying breed, they all come to realize their worth."
ROCK PHOTOGRAPHER KEN REGAN
Legendary rock photographer Ken Regan died on Sunday (November 25th) of cancer, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. Regan who notoriously never told his age, was best known for his shots of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan -- although his works spanned into current events, politics, and sports. His most recent book was published in 2011 -- All Access: The Rock Photography Of Ken Regan.
Last year, New York City's Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo hosted Ken Regan Presents Bob Dylan. The show, which was produced in honor of Dylan's 70th, featured Regan's classic and iconic shots from Dylan's historic fall 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Regan said that prior to the tour, it was inconceivable for Dylan to allow any photographer such unprecedented and unlimited access: "He just came out of his shell. It was like, the equivalent of Howard Hughes -- who nobody had seen or talked to in 20 years -- suddenly saying, 'Okay, I want you to document everything that I'm doing for the next 70 days.' And I did! I shot 13,475 images."
Regan said that even though Dylan was more accessible than he had ever been before in his career -- he did demand a modicum of privacy: "He said, 'There are a couple of reservations that I have. My wife and kids are gonna be on the tour. You can photograph them as much as you want -- never, ever release them.'"
TIME MAGAZINE PERSON OF THE YEAR
As 2013 rapidly approaches, news outlets are starting to put out their best of lists. TIME magazine has revealed the 38 people who are in the running to be named their Person of the Year for 2012.
The list has some of the year's biggest newsmakers from all industries. "Gangnam Style" singer Psy and Jay-Z are a few of the entertainers who made the list in addition to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. A few of the non-entertainment candidates include President Obama, Mitt Romney, and Malala Yousafzai -- the Pakistani teenager who was shot by the Taliban for speaking out in support of education for women in the Muslim world.
TIME's editors have the ultimate say on who earns the title but people are invited to vote for their picks on the magazine's website.
The winner will be announced on Dec. 14th.

EROTIC FICTION IS OUT-SELLING CLASSIC LITERATURE
Since October, books in the erotic fiction category have received four-thousand-percent more searches than The Man Booker Prize winning books, which are hailed as quality works of fiction in London. Play.com reports that erotic novels account for 14-percent of all books sold on its site, and weekly the site receives 100-thousand searchers for the first Fifty Shades of Grey book. (Daily Mail)
WOMEN ARE POSTING HOLIDAY WISH LISTS ON PINTEREST
A new survey of about three-thousand women reveals that one-in-four use the website Pinterest to post items they want others to buy them, and 60-percent said they will use the site for holiday gift ideas this year. The survey was conducted by social network SheSpeaks, and 26-percent of those surveyed said they'd use Pinterest to do research on gifts they are already considering buying for others. (Buzzfeed)
SCENTS CAN SPUR HOLIDAY SPENDING?
New research shows that along with lighting and music, certain scents can inspire shoppers to spend more money. Washington State University found that simple scents, like pine or citrus, are powerful motivators for spending because they don't require much mental processing. This allows the shopper's brain to focus on shopping. For the experiment, researchers concocted one simple scent and one complex scent and found that consumers who shopped while smelling the simple scent spent on average 20-percent more money than those that smelled the complex scent, or no scent at all. EIGHT GREAT PLACES TO HIDE HOLIDAY GIFTS FROM KIDS(The Stir)
1) The Attic. It's dusty. It's scary. It might be impossible for the kids to even get up there. Just be sure to store your gifts in a big black garbage bag or two to keep the dust off!
2) Your Underwear Drawer. No kid (especially boys) is going to want to dig through your underwear drawer. Or even worse, dad's drawer.
3) Suitcases. Kids will never suspect this one! Whether you have small duffel bags or huge suitcases, hide as many of your gifts as you can in these travel necessities. Just make sure you're not going on any trips before the holidays!
4) Right in Front of Their Eyes. The best hiding place is right out in the open. Well not completely. But store your gifts in crates or large boxes, and label them with boring, frightening things that will terrify your children. Grab a Sharpie and write "Math Study Guides" or "Tax Receipts 2007" on them.
5) The Garbage. Get yourself an extra large garbage can and keep it in your garage. Put your presents in a large black garbage bag and then keep it in the can. Just be careful NOT to put that can out on Garbage Days!
6) Under Your Bed. Put your gifts in large black garbage bags and hide them under your bed. Too obvious, you say? Okay, then add a number of decoys. Fill a handful of bags with old clothes and stick those under the bed too, surrounding the actual gifts.
7) In the Hamper. If you have a large hamper, stick the presents at the bottom and cover with dirty clothes. Alternatively, do the same thing in your closet with a large box, but cover with a mound of old dirty clothes.
8) Your Car. Keep what you can in the locked trunk of your car. As long as your kids don't look back there while you're out shopping, they'll never think to look there.
Thanks for listening to The Eagle while you work. Keep it fabulous, Houston!
