THE EAGLES/MIKE LOVE
Once again Beach Boys frontman Mike Love has gotten in trouble by putting his foot in his mouth -- this time while talking about the Eagles. During the group's performance on September 18th at L.A.'s Grammy Museum, Love explained why the Beach Boys reunion tour was coming to an end, and said, "You've got to be careful not to get overexposed. There are promoters who are interested (in more shows by the reunited lineup), but they've said, 'Give it a rest for a year.' The Eagles found out the hard way when they went out for a second year and wound up selling tickets for five dollars."
In a letter sent to the Beach Boys' publicist Jay Jones as well as The Los Angeles Times, the Eagles spokesperson said: "Two things that we know for certain: Mr. Love will never allow the facts get in the way of his ramblings and he will never miss an opportunity to regurgitate his venom. Lest we forget, during his acceptance speech at the Beach Boys' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, which was ostensibly about the importance of harmony and how the Beach Boys 'love all people,' Mr. Love attacked Paul McCartney and Diana Ross for not being in the room. He then went on to say that 'Mick Jagger has always been (afraid) to get on the stage with the Beach Boys.' Since 1994 when the Eagles reunited, they have performed more than 600 shows worldwide. Neither the band nor its reps are aware of any promoter accusing them of being 'overexposed.' Regarding Mr. Love's statement about Eagles tickets being sold for five dollars, according to our records that did happen on June 21st, 1975, when the band performed at Wembley Stadium with the Beach Boys."
PETE TOWNSHEND
Pete Townshend has announced an interview and performance for Friday, October 12th in Boston at the Berklee Performance Center. Tickets for the appearance will run $32.50 with a copy of Townshend's new memoir, Who I Am, being included in the price of admission. Earlier that day, Townshend will wrap his mini-signing tour at the Barnes & Noble store in Boston's Prudential Center.
Excerpts from Who I Am have already been printed in Rolling Stone, with Townshend naming old friend n Mick Jagger as the only man he's ever had the urge to sleep with, revealing in the book: "Mick is the only man I've ever seriously wanted to f***. He was wearing loose pajama-style pants without underwear; as he leaned back I couldn't help noticing the outline of his ample c*** lying against the inside of his leg. From then on, I encouraged the band to arrange our 'equipment' for maximum effect, especially onstage or in photographs."
Townshend revealed that unlike today, where he specifically writes for himself, in the past he never focused on who would perform his material, choosing to just let the inspiration be his guide: "What used to happen was that I used to write, irrespective of whether I was going to sing the song or that the Who were going to sing the song -- or to be honest, if someone came along to me one day. . . Y'know, if Paul Simon, or Sting, or Paul McCartney, or the Stones or something, said, y'know, 'Have you got a song?' Y'know, I gladly would've written for anybody else, it's just that nobody asked me."
ELTON JOHN
Elton John's producer T Bone Burnett revealed that Elton will be revamping his upcoming album, The Diving Board. The album, which was originally expected to see release before the end of this year, has now been pushed back to 2013, and Burnett explained to Rolling Stone, that while Elton has been listening back to the tapes, he's decided to tweak the album before it's released, saying, "This is the first time that Elton's had time to live with something before it's come out. There were like seven or eight songs that were so completely of a piece that they have an identity. I think he thought, 'You know, maybe I should write some more things in that mode so that the album has a tighter identity.' Some tunes were maybe too happy for the overall identity of the album."
Burnett says that The Diving Board recalls the early Elton John trio sound, which featured Elton on piano, Nigel Olsson on drums and late bassist Dee Murray: "The first time I heard Elton it was with a trio at the Troubadour in 1970. And he absolutely killed it. I told Elton I had this profound drummer named Jay Bellerose and you won't need anything else. He plays melody and tone and groove. Then the idea came we should just do it as a trio. Elton called bassist Raphael Saadiq. We cut the whole thing with that really tight kill team."
No release date has been set for The Diving Board, which will be his 31st studio album and his followup to The Union, his 2010 Grammy-nominated album withLeon Russell.
Elton John says that periodically every artist needs to strip things back to the point of going back to the drawing board: "You get to a certain point when you've done so much in this business, where you realize you're encumbered; you get trapped by your own success. And if you want to become creative again you really have to get rid of those trappings and start again back to basics, just basically and do what you do best."
BOB SEGER
Bob Seger polled his fans on what they want as his next official release. Fans were able to vote in four specific categories on BobSeger.com regarding the next Seger collection, with the choices being "A Box Set," "A Live Album," "A Tribute Album," or "A New Album." So far it looks like fans are pretty eager for a live set, with it topping the votes with 44.18 percent; next up is a new album, which garnered a 40.52 percent vote; a box set scored 12.51 percent of the votes; with fans showing very little interest in a Seger tribute album, which only racked up a dismal 2.79 percent of the votes.
Seger revealed that that he was culling his still-untitled new album from about 50 different songs for his followup to his 2006 studio set, Face The Promise. Seger told us he's been working long and hard on the new album: "For about nine months, I worked with about 47 old, unreleased songs. I got about 60, but 47 I really liked. And I worked on that for about nine months -- and that's what I was gonna put out. When I found 'Downtown Train,' which was an '89 track, but then we completely changed it in the fall -- it kinda spiked me to start writing again. And so I started recording. And I'd stay I'm about half-done."
MEN DOING CHORES LEADS TO DIVORCE
Sharing housework can apparently lead to divorce. Research has suggested that the more chores a man does -- the more likely the couple will split. A new survey found that while most were happy to share childcare, the women still did most of the housework -- and in 11 percent of cases, the women did almost all of it. But the divorce rate among those who shared chores equally was about 50 percent higher than among those where the woman did most of it. Sociologist Dr Frank Furedi noted that chore-sharing tends to take place among professional couples, where divorce rates are high. (Daily Mail)
WHAT DOES A WOMAN REALLY KEEP IN HER PURSE?
According to a new survey -- toilet paper, spare underwear, chocolate and an iPod have places reserved in the handbag. Painkillers, sunglasses and nail files are also most likely to be found deep in the bags, alongside more predictable items such as money, a make-up bag and a notepad. Strangely -- only 72 percent of women actually carry money or bank cards with them. The research also revealed that most carry 40 items inside them. (Telegraph)
INSTAGRAM MORE POPULAR THAN TWITTER
Photo sharing app Instagram has overtaken Twitter for the first time. Across mobile phones in the US during August, Instagram received an average of 7.3 million daily visitors, while Twitter attracted 6.9 million users. It also found users spent more time on the photo-sharing site than those who visited Twitter. Instagram visitors spent an average of 257 minutes on the site via mobile phones in August, while those logging on to Twitter spent an average of 170 minutes viewing the site. (ComScore)
GENIUS WAYS TO SAVE ON GAS (Yahoo!)
A warm engine is more effective,so string errands together by driving to the farthest destination first, which will get the block heated up, and then working your way home.
On local roads, keep cool by opening the windows, enjoying the breeze, and turning off the gas-draining air-conditioning. At highway speeds, however, driving with the windows down creates drag. So at 40 mph or faster, roll up the windows and put on the AC.
Notice to hoarders: You don't need to lug around a case of oil, a bag of sand, or that box of antique tools you got at the garage sale, right? So empty the trunk-less weight, better mileage.
At the pump, avoid gas rated E15. The E is for ethanol, which has about 30 percent less energy than gasoline and kills mpg. (Ethanol-free gas is rare today; you'll probably have to settle for E10.)
Avoid traffic pinch points when you can. Driving at speed is more fuel efficient than creeping along in low gear.
While at the filling station, inflate your tires properly and check them for uneven wear. And steer clear of those stickier, wider performance tires, which increase road friction.
Thanks for listening to The Eagle while you work. Keep it fabulous, Houston!
