The nominees for 2013 Songwriters Hall Of Fame won't be officially announced until October 15th -- but The Associated Press confirmed the shortlist for the upcoming inductions. Among the artists that are on the ballot for next year are Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Christine McVie, Elvis Costello, ELO's Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Ray Davies, the Eurythmics' Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, Jeff Lynne, B.B. King, Jimmy Buffett, and Foreigner's Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, among others.
Among the songwriters nominated in the non-performer category are "Chain Of Fools" songwriter Don Covay, J.D.Souther, who co-wrote the Eagles' "Best Of My Love," "Victim Of Love," "Heartache Tonight," and "New Kid In Town, and Bobby Braddock and Holly Knight, who co-wrote Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield" and Tina Turner's "Better Be Good to Me."
Hall of Fame voters can choose two nominees from the performer list and three from the non-performer list, with the votes due in by December 17th.
The 2013 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala will take place on June 13th at New York City's Marriott Marquis.
PETE TOWNSHEND
Pete Townshend is busy promoting his new memoir, Who I Am. and will appear today (October 11th) signing copies of the book at Ridgewood, New Jersey's Bookends book store at 6 p.m. In addition to appearing on ABC's The View, he's already sat down for a two-hour Q&A at the New York Public Library to discuss the autobiography.
Townshend explained that in addition to making the book a good read, the truthfulness needed to ring true to his life: "I had to write the truth as I saw it and I remembered it. Now that's a very strange truth, because everybody''s memory is different and then I knew that there would be arguments with my friend Barney (Richard Barnes) later on, when he said, 'That didn't happen this way' or 'That didn't happen that way.' I'm getting a bit of that now with old friends who say, 'No, that's not what happened.' And I said, 'Listen, I have to tell my story my way.' But this was an honest. . . for me, it had to be what I believed to be the truth."
KISS
Kiss is back with it's 20th album, Monster, which was co-produced by Paul Stanley. Stanley spoke to Rolling Stone about the new set and also touched upon the fact that Kiss has once again failed to make the shortlist for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When asked if it bothered him, Stanley said, "No, because I think it's so transparent. You have the East Coast music Mafia -- they are clearly more motivated by each other than reality. Filling their criteria is leaving them at this point some pretty slim pickings. Would we accept? Of course, because it matters to our fans. So, I would be gracious. But honestly, it means nothing to me. My life is far beyond anything I could have anticipated and will continue to be so without a new doorstop."
The latest lineup of Kiss features drummer Eric Singer and lead guitarist Tommy Thayer dressed as original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, respectively. Stanley was asked if he has any contact with the Kiss co-founders: "No. It's not out of animosity. It just has no point in my life today. Safe to say, the band wouldn't be here without those guys having been in it. The band also wouldn't be here today if those guys were still in it. I respect and love what we created together, but that was a long time ago."
Stanley spoke about how his early influences helped inform the sound of Monster: "I wanted to make an album that really hearkened back to why I got into this in the first place. I was lucky enough as a kid to spend most of my weekends at the Fillmore East. On a great night, that was like a Holy Roller evangelical church. When rock n' roll is done with that fervor, it's close to gospel. That's what I wanted to go for with this album -- passion as opposed to perfection. James Brown wasn't perfect. Motown, the Beatles, the (Rolling) Stones, (Led) Zeppelin, early Elvis (Presley) -- I wanted to maintain the essence of it, getting a first, second or, if you really had to push it, a third take and record on analog tape and capture the intensity of what you're doing, and not compromise it."
WOMEN NEED BIGGER BRAS
Bigger bras are in demand. Two years ago, the classic 34B was the top-selling size at the department store Debenhams, but figures show that 34DD was the most in demand size this year. Even if the women aren't that big -- they're pretending they are. Padded and push-up bras made up 70 percent of bra sales in Debenhams stores this year, compared with 36 percent in 2010. (Daily Mail)
WENDYS HAS THE FASTEST FAST FOOD
Wendys is the fastest fast food joint. Average service time in a Wendy's drive-thru line was only 129.75 seconds, according to a recent study by QSR magazine and Insula Research. They won by a landslide as runner-up Taco Bell was 20 seconds slower on average. Burger King was in last place with an average drive-thru wait of 201.33 seconds. Other findings? Chick-fil-A had the most polite service and Taco Bell had the best audio speakers for ordering, with 98.4 percent of drive-thru employees being clear and understandable. (Fox News)
WOMEN PREFER MEN WITH SHAVED CHESTS
Apparently women really do prefer a man with a smooth chest. Researchers compared the attractiveness of men before and after shaving their chest -- and found only 20 percent of women preferred the bare version. Scientists are puzzled by this preference as it doesn't appear to have an evolutionary basis. One of the most prominent theories has been that, by choosing a hairless mate, women are actually trying to avoid the lice and other bugs that can live in a furry male -- but a subsequent study found it wasn't the case. HOW TO MEET MEN IN BARS (YourTango.com)
1. Location is everything. When taking a seat at a bar, location is important, especially if you're looking to meet someone. Whatever you do, don't sit at the end of the bar -- that's no-man's land, literally. Mix into the crowd, and if you can find a seat near a group of guys, even better. Chances are they'll start talking to a solo girl.
2. Say hello. Introduce yourself to the bartender and the people around you. Making new friends is a positive not a negative, and being friendly is a great start.
3. Put down the phone. How can you meet anyone if you are busy looking at your phone? The world won't end if you put your phone in your bag, coat, pocket or wherever for an hour. If you don't have distractions, you are open to what's around you ... and that could be a single man.
4. Smile. No one wants to talk to -- or date -- a sourpuss. If you make eye contact with a gent across the bar, smile, even if he's not your type. You never know, his buddy might be the guy you've been looking for.
5. Pick the right night. TWT (aka Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) are great nights to fly solo. Monday can be good as well, but since it's the first night of the week it's a tossup if people will start the week off going out. TWT are ideal as people usually schedule work dinners, drinks with friends or just need to chill after work and rather than go home they'll hit up a bar.
Thanks for listening to The Eagle while you work. Keep it fabulous, Houston!
