Remembering Jimi Hendrix. Bob Dylan & John Lennon. Bon Scott statue. Rod Stewart's "Merry Christmas, Baby". Tattoo artist & mom arrested after 14 yr. old gets inked. The problem with being 'just friends'. The eight best things about being in a relationship. Five steps to the perfect apology. The seven symptoms you should not ignore. What unemployment can teach you.
JIMI HENDRIX
It was 42 years ago today (September 18th, 1970), that Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27, about two months shy of his 28th birthday. Over 40 years later, the events surrounding his death remain sketchy at best, with the only clear fact being that the coroner report stated that Hendrix had asphyxiated in his own vomit, which mainly consisted of red wine. Monika Dannemann, his girlfriend at the time, has long contended that he was alive when placed in the ambulance.
In July, the Jimi Hendrix Experience's legendary second show at Northern California's Berkeley Community Center from May 30th, 1970 finally saw official release. The set, which has been bootlegged numerous times over the years, showcases a still-evolving Hendrix less than four months before his sudden death. Backed by the final Experience lineup of Mitch Mitchell on drums and Band Of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox on bass, the trio tears through such Hendrix classics as "Stone Free," "Hey Joe," "Foxey Lady," "The Star Spangled Banner," "Purple Haze," and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," among others.
The tracklist to The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At Berkeley is: Introduction, "Pass It On (Straight Ahead)," "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)," "Lover Man," "Stone Free," "Hey Joe," "I Don't Live Today," "Machine Gun," "Foxey Lady," "Star Spangled Banner," "Purple Haze," and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)."
BOB DYLAN
Nearly 32 years after his murder, Bob Dylan has finally eulogized John Lennon in song on his newly released album, Tempest. In the current issue of Rolling Stone, Dylan talks about three of the most important artists of the past half century -- all of whom Dylan has shared a personal bond with -- Bruce Springsteen, Bono, and Lennon.
Dylan spoke about Lennon -- whom he paid tribute to on the Tempest closing track, "Roll On John," explaining, "John came from the northern regions of Britain. The hinterlands. Just like I did in America, so we had some kind of environmental things in common. Both places were pretty isolated. Though mine was more landlocked than his. But everything is stacked against you when you come from that. You have to have the talent to overcome everything. That was something I had in common with him. We were about the same age and heard the same exact things growing up."
He went on to say: "Our paths crossed at a certain time, and we both faced a lot of adversity. We even had that in common. I wish he was still here because we could talk about a lot of things now."
When asked about Springsteen and U2, he said: "I love Bruce like a brother. He's a powerful performer -- unlike anybody. I care about him deeply. U2's a force to be reckoned with. Bono's energy has far-reaching effects, and in some ways he's his own tempest."
E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren has had the pleasure of performing with Dylan on several occasions. He shed some light on what its like to be onstage with Dylan: "Not only is he a genius writer, but he's also someone on stage that's very loose and likes to mix it up and improvise, and doesn't worry about, y'know, pretenses or airs, and it's just very genuine. And he likes the surprise element in improv."
BON SCOTT
Late AC/DC singer Bon Scott will be honored with a statue in Kirriemuir, Scotland, his birthplace and home in his early years. A community group called DD8 Music, which organizes the annual Bon Scott music festival in the town, has asked sculptor John McKenna to design a statue as a lasting tribute. McKenna said, "It's early days, but it's a great honor. Bon Scott was an icon from my teenage years." There's no word on when the statue is expected to be unveiled. The legendary singer was just 33 when he was found dead in February 1980 from acute alcohol poisoning after a night out in London. (HenneMusic)
ROD STEWART
Rod Stewart will return to HSN October 26th to peddle his first holiday collection, Merry Christmas, Baby, which will be released on October 30th. The album follows Rod's 2010 Fly Me To The Moon. . . The Great American Songbook: Volume V (five) -- which sold over 25,000 units following Rod's performance on HSN. He remains the top-selling artist in the network's history. (Billboard)
TATTOO ARTIST & MOM ARRESTED AFTER 14-YEAR-OLD GETS INKED
A 39-year-old tattoo artist in Texas who inked a 14-year-old was arrested on Friday (September 14th) even though the teen's mother gave permission. Brian Lee Sporn was arrested and charged with one count of performing tattoos prohibited for certain persons. The teenager's mom was also arrested and charged with two counts of obtaining tattoos prohibited for certain persons. Texas state law bans tattoo artists from tattooing anyone under the age of 18. The mother, 31-year-old Lydie Krenzke Mathers, said, "I read the law and as a parent I thought I could allow her to do it." The teen got two tattoos -- a heart with wings on her side, and another of the letters SS on her leg. Mathers said the tattoos are barely visible. Officials said they launched their investigation after getting an anonymous tip. (UPI)
THE PROBLEM WITH BEING 'JUST FRIENDS':
According to a new study doen by the University of Wisconsin, men and women can be just friends but that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't think about each other naked. Fourty four pairs of college age friends we separated and asked a series of questions. The average lengths of the friendships were 2 years but some had been friends for over 10 years. The findings were that men were about 24 percent more attracted to their friend and were 17 percent more interested in dating. But the women were also attracted to their friends, with anaverage desire to date was a 4 on a 9 point scale. The study was then done on older friends and researchers found that the men felt twice as much attraction to their lady friends. So, men and women can be friends but there is some degree of attraction. (menshealth.com)
