Neal Schon wants to reconnect with Steve Perry. Happy birthday Meat Loaf! The Who announces opening act for first leg of tour. Trailer for Stones' "Crossfire Hurricane". Is Myspace back? Road trips & relationships. Eat 9 meals a day?
JOURNEY
After years of little or no communication, Journey co-founder Neal Schon would like nothing more than to connect with the band's former frontman Steve Perry. Schon, who'll release his latest solo album, The Calling, on October 23rd, spoke to Vintage Vinyl News and talked candidly about the prospects of ever playing with Perry again. Schon said, "I always answer it the same way and then everybody writes it like it's the first time I ever said it. You know, it's like, I've been saying it forever that we've always left the door open, you know? We didn't kick Steve out -- he walked. He went on to pursue his solo stuff and went out there playing our material before we did. He was out doing a solo tour and he was playing Journey songs and so at that point, I went 'there's no harm in Jon (Cain) and I trying to reform this band,' because we (were very involved too)."
Schon, who hasn't made music with Perry since 1998 added: "I hope that someday, that we can get to the point to where I can pick up the telephone and I can talk to him without talking through management and attorneys. I still don't quite realize why we can't just talk one on one, for whatever reason, just to say hello -- not to pressure anybody to do anything or anything like that -- it wouldn't be like that, just in a friendly manner."
MEAT LOAF
Happy Birthday to Meat Loaf, who turns 65-years-old today (September 27th)!!! Throughout the years, Meat Loaf has given conflicting reports as to the actual date of his birth -- not out of vanity, but as a general payback to an at times harsh rock press. When we asked him what year he was born in, he said: "Anywhere from '46 to '54, take your pick. When I'm doing press, I make up stories, 'cause what's the difference in me making up stories, or their making up stories? So I figure, if they can do it, why can't I?"
Meat Loaf is touring behind his latest album, Hell In A Handbasket. The album, which is his followup to 2009's Hang Cool Teddy Bear set, features appearances by rapper Chuck D. on "Blue Sky/Mad Mad World/The Good God Is A Woman And She Don't Like Ugly," along with a reunion of his fellow Celebrity Apprentice cast mates -- Trace Adkins, Lil Jon, and Mark McGrath -- on "Stand In The Storm." On October 16th, he'll release his new concert DVD, called The Guilty Pleasure Tour.
Despite some well-received work of the years, Meat Loaf will always be best remembered for his 1977 blockbuster, Bat Out Of Hell. He said that the album has grown beyond a successful '70s album into a full-blown cultural phenomenon: "It's no longer about me. It belongs to you, and you create your own stories, and you create your own place in time for that record. Everything is geared so that when you hear it, you're funneled right into that speaker, and it becomes a visual of your life as opposed to a visual of my life."
THE WHO
The Who has announced that soul rockers Vintage Trouble will serve as the band's opening act for the first leg of their upcoming North American tour. Vintage Trouble has previously warmed crowds up for the likes of Bon Jovi, Lenny Kravitz, and Brian May, among others. The Who has also just announced the full musical lineup of their Quadrophenia & More tour, which kicks off on November 1st in Sunrise, Florida.
In addition to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, the Who's show will feature longtime sidemen Zak Starkey on drums, Pino Palladino on bass, Townshend's younger brother Simon Townshend on guitar and backing vocals, along with Quadrophenia session pianist Chris Stainton, Loren Gold on keyboards and backing vocals, and Daltrey solo sideman Frank Simes, who'll serve as the musical director while contributing keyboards and backing vocals.
On October 31st, the Who's new documentary, Quadrophenia: Can You See The Real Me?, will premiere on VH1 Classic.
Roger Daltrey said that he's pumped to be returning to Quadrophenia as a concert piece for the first time in 15 years: "It seems daunting, when you look, it's 37 shows, but when I'm up there singing, I don't wanna be anywhere else. That's what it -- for me, singing is the ultimate high, and to sing these songs, it's incredibly challenging -- but I kinda like that. You have to fight to do it, and I've always enjoyed a good battle."
ROLLING STONES
The Rolling Stones' have released the trailer for their upcoming HBO documentary, Crossfire Hurricane. The 50th anniversary retrospective takes its title from a classic lyric from 1968's "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and will premiere on November 15th. Mick Jagger said that for a project to truly be successful, it needs to connect with its entire prospective audience: "When you put out a piece of work, you want to have, first, you want to feel 'I like it' and the rest of the musicians, band, whatever, have to like it -- everyone has to like it. And then your friends have to like it, and then you want the public to like it, and you want the critics to like it, so it can work on many levels. So you can be very happy with an album, but nobody else (laughs) likes it -- that's not a success. But it's a big success if you get all of those groups liking it."
IS MYSPACE BACK? MySpace is launching its comeback. Armed with Justin Timberlake and a renewed motivation, the social network is aiming to take on Facebook. Take a look at the preview.
84% SAY ROAD TRIPS STRENGTHENED RELATIONSHIP
A new survey from YourTango and Ford reveals road trips are good for relationships. 91 percent of couples have taken road trips together, and 84 percent agree the experience has strengthened their relationship. However, coupled driving time is not all sunshine. For instance, plenty of couples (63 percent) have a "back-seat driver" on board who "helps" the real driver negotiate the road, offering him or her the following advice:
- 32 percent tell the driver they're driving too fast
- 27 percent tell them they're going the wrong way
- 22 percent tell them they're not paying enough attention to their surroundings/traffic
- 15 percent chide them for driving too slowly
- 9 percent tell them they're not using signals properly/sufficiently
- 7 percent chide them for honking/usual foul language/gestures towards other drivers
EAT 9 MEALS A DAY?!
First we were told to eat three meals a day -- then the number was upped to six to avoid hunger and over-eating -- and now we are being advised to consume 9 times in a 24-hour period. Eating more frequently during the day means there are no sudden spikes of fatty acids, enabling the body to deal with the intake more effectively. This may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and even encourage weight loss. While they all had the same calorie intake and food, half the participants ate fewer than six times a day, while the remainder ate more than six times. Results show the first group had a significantly higher systolic blood pressure, the pressure that blood exerts on vessels while the heart is beating, compared with the more frequent eaters -- and were also significantly heavier.
