Stones road plans for 2013. Fleetwood Mac tour. Paul McCartney's vanity? Peter Frampton gives credit to David Bowie. Smartphone app to help with restaurant seating. Leaded gasoline linked to violent behavior? The most and least stressful U.S. jobs of 2013. Ten Valentine's date ideas that aren't cheesy.
ROLLING STONES
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards spoke frankly about the Rolling Stones' road plans for 2013, with the general vibe given by the pair being that more shows are on the way. Jagger talked about the prep behind the band's handful of high-profile and secret gigs late last year commemorating the Stones' 50th anniversary, telling Rolling Stone, "Everyone was trying to get the band really on. Keith concentrated on holding his parts together. . . and I wasn't letting the vocals take second place. We wanted to put the music out in a good way, not just be flash. . . Everybody talks about how they like the sloppiness of the Rolling Stones, but there's a difference between having swerve and being too sloppy."
As far as whether the band will be hitting the road for an extended road trek or playing some of the major festivals this year, Jagger said: "There have been quite a few offers. I'm going to see what's on the table and discuss it with everyone. We'll announce it when we've figured it out."
Keith Richards was less mysterious about the prospect of fans seeing the Stones on stage this year, saying, "Really, all you're going to have to do is wait for an announcement. (The 2012 shows) went like a dream, at the same speed, man. But we barely got off the starting blocks. It would be dopey to bring things up to this level and say, 'Well, that's that, 50 years, bye-bye.'"
Although the Stones have never been fans of commemorating anniversaries, they've softened over the years, putting out expanded retrospectives of both 1972's Exile On Main Street and 1978's Some Girls albums. Along those same lines, Mick Jagger felt that the band's 50th birthday was too important a milestone to ignore: "I though always that the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones was a good time to say, 'O.K., so you want to do something, does everyone want to do something, and what would that something be?' And I would suggest that we just limit ourselves and don't take on, like a 100-city tour, we just do something, y'know, a small bite of the biscuit and see how that goes."
FLEETWOOD MAC
Stevie Nicks says she called Mick Fleetwood out for accusing her earlier this year of putting her solo work ahead of Fleetwood Mac. Back in March, Fleetwood told Playboy, "I don't believe Fleetwood Mac will ever tour again, but I really hope we do. We have rehearsed and prepared for it since 2010. We were supposed to tour in 2011, but we delayed it for a year to allow Stevie Nicks to support her solo record and for Lindsey Buckingham to do the same with his. I've always been supportive of my bandmates doing solo albums, so long as we kept our band together. . . I played drums on most of Stevie's album, the one she is still out there supporting and the one that is the reason that, for now, she refuses to do a Fleetwood Mac tour. It comes down to her."
Nicks, who spent both 2011 and 2012 promoting her Top Ten hit album, In Your Dreams, told, Yahoo Music, "I completely beat Mick up about that, because he was not thinking when he did that article. Mick knows more than anybody how loyal I am to Fleetwood Mac. When I went to do my solo career in 1981, I sat everybody down and said, 'Listen, I am not leaving Fleetwood Mac ever. And you can believe me, that's a promise. I am only doing a solo career because I have so many extra songs that I need another vehicle, so that when we come home and you guys all go off on these great big vacations, I'll just go and work on a record and then I'll go out and do a three-month tour, and then I'll be ready when you start up again. I'm never going to be the one to break up this band, so don't ever put that on me.' And I have been true to my word through everything."
Lindsey Buckingham added that he completely supported Nicks' decision to keep her solo album on the front burner for an extra year: "Yes, Fleetwood Mac was supposed to be going out last year and touring, and yes, Stevie's reneging on that did cause a certain amount of frustration in the ranks. But you know, I don't think there's any way you can point fingers at anybody. We've all been ones to cause trouble at one time or another. And I would not begrudge her -- nor did I begrudge her -- following her bliss to the point of getting to 2013."
PAUL MCCARTNEY
Insiders are blaming Paul McCartney's vanity for only allowing one-track to the charity collection, 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief. McCartney -- who according to our sources would only perform if he was the closing act of the night -- played one of the longest sets of the night, performing an eight-song set, including a new song, "Cut Me Some Slack" with the surviving members of Nirvana.
Despite the high profile spot, McCartney only allowed his performance of the Beatles' 1968 "White Album" classic "Helter Skelter" to be included in both the digital and CD versions of the charity compilation. A source told The New York Daily News: "Egos are also to blame for there only being one Paul track. He didn't like the way he sounded and would only approve the one on the album. A shame, because 'Blackbird' was so beautiful live! It's unfortunate that celebrity ego can tarnish even a concert for charity."
One of the highlights of McCartney's recent shows has been a gut-spilling rendition of "Helter Skelter," which McCartney's band had to persuade him to finally perform live. McCartney recalled the Beatles' legendary 1968 session for the track: "We just tried to get it louder -- "Guitars -- can we have 'em sound louder! The drums louder!' And that was really all that I wanted to do, make a very loud raunchy rock and roll record with the Beatles -- which it is. We did it so long and so often, that on the end of it Ringo (Starr) did have blisters."
PETER FRAMPTON
Although Peter Frampton's career is going from strength to strength these days, he credits childhood friend David Bowie for lending a sorely needed helping hand 25 years ago. Following the release of his slow selling 1986 comeback album Premonition and an opening slot on Stevie Nicks' Rock A Little tour, Frampton was still being written off as a relic of the '70s.
He recalled to M Magazine that Bowie offered him a chance to start all over by allowing him to put his musicianship first: "The '80s were a difficult period for me. It wasn't until my dear friend David Bowie got me out on the road for the Glass Spider tour and on his Never Let Me Down record and reintroduced me as a guitar player around the world. I can never thank him enough for believing in me, and seeing past the image of the satin pants and big hair to the guitar player he first met when we played together in school."
David Bowie biographer Marc Spitz said that Peter Frampton was able to shed new light on Bowie's teen years, having known Bowie since his childhood when Frampton's father served as Bowie's first creative mentor: "Owen Frampton was the art teacher at Bromley Tech where David Bowie went to high school -- whatever the British equivalent of high school is. And Owen Frampton was the father of Peter Frampton who obviously went on to become one of the biggest rock stars of the '70s and then was brought on tour in '87 on the Glass Spider tour as the lead guitarist. So just to have that range of perspective from the late '50s and early '60s up until the late '80s, was really valuable and a great interview. And Frampton was just the nicest guy. I'm sure people say that about him. That was one of the pivotal interviews for the book, where I knew stuff was coming together and I knew that it was probably going to work."
SMARTPHONE APP TO HELP WITH RESTAURANT SEATING
A U.S. developer says a smartphone app is in the works that would have the ability to text a restaurant patron when their table becomes available. The app is called NoWait, and founder Robb Myer says it allows the restaurant to track how long people have been waiting, and how long it takes them to get back when they are alerted. Myer says it appeals to costumers who would no longer have to worry about being out of range for a restaurant pager. The app is currently available to restaurants on a monthly subscription, and ZDNet reports more than 1,200-locations already use the service, despite the fact that it only runs on Apple iOS tablets and smartphones. LEADED GASOLINE LINKED TO VIOLENT BEHAVIOR?
.Researchers say that exposure to high levels of lead has been known to cause birth defects and hearing problems, and now they are beginning to find evidence that it may cause aggressive behavior. Tulane University toxicologist Howard Mielke says childhood exposure to high levels of lead in the 1960s and 1970s resulted in an uptick in crime two decades later. Meilke says that the use of leaded gasoline declined in the 1980s, and crime rates dropped off at corresponding rates. Meilke says that in six major cities, including Chicago and San Diego, for every one percent increase in the number of tons of lead released into the atmosphere resulted in a half percentage point increase in the aggravated assault rate 22-years later. TEN VALENTINE'S DATE IDEAS THAT AREN'T CHEESY(Your Tango):
1) Burlesque Show. Spend this Valentines Day getting sultry by taking your date to a burlesque show. These old-timey acts are more sexy than skanky (think feather boas, long gloves, fans and tasseled pasties). Talented performers often accompany the campy humor and killer costumes.
2) Indoor Picnic. Skip the restaurant scene, where you'll inevitably be stuck with an overpriced pre-fixe menu and a seat that leaves you knee-to-knee with other star-crossed lovebirds. Spend your Valentines Day dinner enjoying an indoor picnic instead. Spread out the blanket, break out the fancy accouterments - and don't forget the bubbly.
3) "Glamping." Let's face it: camping isn't always sexy (bug spray and outdoor toilets can be a romance buzzkill, to say the least). But "glamping" (glamorous camping) can make for the ultimate Valentines Day staycation. Pitch a tent (not that kind) in the backyard or even the bedroom, whip up a batch of s'mores, light up the fireplace (on DVD) and get all cozy in that sleeping bag for two.
4) Roller Skating. Most dates will be hitting the ice skating rink come Valentines Day, so go old school by taking your date roller skating instead. Bust out your tube socks and short shorts - the roller rink makes for a super-fun Valentines Day setting. You can hang out in the arcade, buy your date a candy necklace, and get cozy for a couple's skate.
5) Bowling. Bowling may not reek of romance, but c'mon, it's fun! Throw back a few cold ones, grab some junk food and settle in for some healthy competition this Valentine's Day. Make things a little more interesting by keeping score and promising the winner a Valentine's Day "prize."
6) Comedy Show. Some say laughter is an aphrodisiac, and who are we to argue with that logic? Also, what better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to laugh your butt off? Grab a date and head to the nearest comedy club for an off-the-grid V-Day experience.
7) Hot Yoga. Flexible? Get steamy with a Valentines Day "hot yoga" class for two. The flow of the poses in the heated room will increase blood flow and boost your endorphins - plus your partner will look sexy in a sweaty downward dog. The best part? A shower is absolutely necessary after this type of class, so make it a shower for two.
8) Concert. Skip the opera this Valentines Day and head straight for the ultimate rock-n-roll date: take your Valentine to see his or her favorite band. Or just hit up a local music venue for a live show. Seeing Jay-z or Fun. is a perfectly romantic Valentine's Day gift.
9) Sexy Scavenger Hunt. Design a sexy scavenger hunt for your honey this Valentines Day. Create clues that lead to special places you've been together and reward them with sexy prizes. (Try recreating your first kiss.) Bonus: This can be completely free, and you'll score major points for creativity.
10) Salsa Dancing. You don't have to watch "Dancing with the Stars" to know that salsa is super sexy. Work off your Valentines Day dinner by hitting up a Latin club, or take a lesson for two. Online deal sites like Groupon.com and Livingsocial.com often offer coupons on dance lessons, so check before hit the dance floor.
