Stones heading back into the studio? Sting tour dates. Elton John tour plans. Journey teams up with Rascal Flatts. The Dammit Doll. Is Facebook making you bitter? What men really want. Five things to try without technology.
ROLLING STONES
Ron Wood is confident that the Rolling Stones will definitely head back into the studio to record a followup to 2005's A Bigger Bang. The band just issued two new tracks -- "Doom And Gloom" and "One More Shot" on their career-spanning hits collection, called, Grrr!
Wood talked about the speed in which the band tracked the two new songs during sessions last year in Paris, and spoke about how he envisions the next Stones album taking shape, telling Classic Rock magazine, "I think we should go to the basic essence of the songwriting of Mick (Jagger) and Keith (Richards). If they need any help, I'm always there, but I don't think they need any help. They seem to be thriving at the moment, and very creative."
When asked if any new album sessions are being planned, Wood said: "Well, not planned, but no doubt there will be."
He went on to talk about the prospects of more group work for 2013, saying, "When that wheel starts rolling, it can't stop. And it's just not us, it's the whole organization. The trucks! I can already hear the trucks starting up. The lighting rigs, the make-up people -- the fluff and puff. The circus is in town."
Although Ron Wood first started gigging with the Stones back in 1975, it took until 1992 for him to actually become a full partner in the Rolling Stones organization, and until then was paid as a salaried employee: "Well, after an apprenticeship of 17 years, it just went by like that. Although it wasn't a labeled apprenticeship, I felt that out of respect I would seep in by osmosis into the Stones' world."
STING
Sting has announced the initial dates for the 2013 North American leg of his "Back To Bass" tour. Sting will kick things off on May 30th in Kelowna, British Columbia and, as of now, will wrap things up on June 26th, in St. John's Newfoundland. Sting, who'll be playing bass for the road trek, will be joined by longtime guitarist Dominic Miller, E Street Band co-founding keyboardist David Sancious, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, electric fiddler Peter Tickell, and vocalist Jo Lawry. More dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
Although Sting has nothing to prove after such a monumental career, he admits that the stage is still a huge part of his job: "Y'know, I've been for touring most of my life, coming to places -- most of them are really happy to see you (laughs), which is an interesting drug to put in your vein every night -- hard to give up. I think I'm getting better as an artist, as a bandleader, as a songwriter; so I'll just keep doing that until I'm too old and stupid to do it any more."
ELTON JOHN
Elton John has just added a handful of stops to his set of spring dates down South. The eight-date U.S. mini tour will now kick-off on March 15th in Birmingham, Alabama and wrap up on April 5th in Nashville, Tennessee. On April 20th, he'll be back performing his Million Dollar Piano show at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace.
On January 11th, Elton and partner David Furnish welcomed their second son, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John. The baby, who weighed eight pounds and four ounces, was once again born via a surrogate in Los Angeles. The couple already has a two-year-old son, Zachary.
Elton John and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin are still hard at work on their latest bunch of songs, going in a third time to revamp the material for Elton's upcoming album. Although the set is still on track for a May release, the album's name has been changed from The Diving Board to Voyeur. Elton said that in his 45-year partnership with Taupin, one member has never outranked the other: "It's never been major/minor, it's always been 50/50, it's never been. . . we've never even thought of it like that, from my point of view, anyway. It's a relationship that's never, ever been questioned. It's always as a one -- it's never split. It's a complete 'one' relationship."
JOURNEY
Rascal Flatts and Journey will team up to headline the Super Bowl CMT Crossroads concert at the New Orleans Sugar Mill on Saturday, February 2. The show, called CMT Crossroads: Journey and Rascal Flatts, will air that same day -- the day before the Super Bowl -- on CMT. Fans can register to be a part of CMT Crossroads as NFL Insiders at 1iota.com.
This CMT Crossroads concert marks the second Super Bowl appearance for Journey. The band previously performed in 2009 at NFL Tailgate Party before Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida.
This also marks the second collaboration for Journey and Rascal Flatts. In June of last year, Flatts closed the CMT Music Awards by inviting Journey to perform their hit "Don't Stop Believin'" with them on stage.
THE DAMMIT DOLL IS THE LATEST IN ANGER MANAGEMENT TOYS
Stuffed fabric dolls called "Dammit Dolls" are reportedly selling like hotcakes. The 12-inch doll is meant to be an "anger-release" tool but some psychologists have said the doll encourages aggressive and violent behavior. Nancy Lewis, the vice president of sales for Dammit Doll, LLC explains, "We're not out to solve the world's problems or make any statements, or promote anything except 'Here's a great doll.' It's a fun impulse item, and it makes people laugh when they pick it up and read the poem [that comes attached on the doll]. Everybody wants one. It's a feel-good item." One retailer selling the dolls at his store -- The Paper Merchant -- in Naples, Florida, said, "They're selling like crazy. It's a stupid thing, like a pet rock, that you get somebody when you don't know what else to give them. I don't think it's a violence thing really. They are definitely fun." The doll costs about $15. IS FACEBOOK MAKING YOU BITTER?
A new study shows that Facebook can spur feelings of envy when you see a "friend" on the social network exceling or enjoying life in ways that you are not. German researchers ask 600-adult participants about their feelings when exposed to social media. About one-third of the participants said they experienced mainly negative feelings such as frustration, and researchers determined that the cause for this frustration was usually due to envy. Participants were also asked in what context their last experience of envy had taken place-- and just over 70-percent said it was in real life, while about 20-percent said it was while using Facebook. Study leader, Dr. Hanna Krasnova, says social media allows users to make social comparisons that can provoke envy, and that social networks allow users inprecedented access to information on others. Krasnova adds that their findings signal that users increasingly perceive Facebook as a stressful environment, which may endanger platform sustainability. (Forbes)
WHAT MEN REALLY WANT(Fox News):
1) Talk More Like a Man. We don't mean to clear your throat or speak in deeper tones. Just get to the point quicker. As much as men love the sound of your voice and really love to help you out, their attention spans are short.
2) Grab Hold of His Hand. Many women think that men don't like cuddling, hand-holding, and other non-sexual forms of closeness; they're wrong. Men enjoy it as much as you do, but they are conditioned to hide these deep desires to avoid the appearance of weakness - "non-maleness" - in front of other men and even from you. When you display your love in public by grabbing his hand, planting a brief but passionate kiss or touching his thigh with your hand, you demonstrate confidence in your sexuality, which men find irresistible.
3) Give Him Props. Remember how hard you worked on those show-and-tell projects in kindergarten, and how good you felt when the class clapped and, at home, Dad said "attagirl"? Men are, in many ways, kindergarteners who want nothing more than your appreciation and respect for their hard work. Because that recognition rarely comes from their bosses, it's even more critical that you give it to them on occasion at home when they do something particularly thoughtful or skillful. Men grow up with cultural expectations to be strong and brave, to suppress their emotions, fears, and hurts, so it may be very difficult to detect this need beneath their stoic armor. But, rest assured, it's there; men can be insecure.
4) Laugh With and at Him. After her body, her sense of humor is the most attractive thing about women for men who responded to The Big Book of Sex survey. But that doesn't mean you have to be quick with jokes and witty one-liners. Simply being able to laugh with him, at him, and at yourself is a sign of intellectual compatibility, says Dr. Billy Goldberg, co-author of Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Sex? "Men want a woman who is as comfortable relating her own ridiculous anecdote as she is listening to ours."
5) Ask for What You Want. Men aren't the best mind readers. But they understand coaching, having spent years playing organized sports. So most of them respond well to feedback and direction. In fact, they would very much enjoy hearing what you'd like them to do to you in bed. If you're not really comfortable asking for specifics, take the pressure off by talking in generalities when you're not in bed.
FIVE THINGS TO TRY WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY(Huffington Post):
1) Cooking. Cooking requires love as well as undivided attention. Keeping the chicken from burning and the house from going up in flames will keep you busy enough to turn off the phone.
2) Wonder. This one sounds weird because it is. It is completely weird to wonder about anything with a smartphone. We shouldn't take for granted that we have access to more knowledge than in any other time in history. We should give ourselves time to think about the question before knowing the answer.
3) Talking. Kids think less of texting in the middle of a conversation. As we get older we learn that it's really rude. Turn your phone off when you're out to coffee with friends. Don't take their time and attention for granted. Otherwise they'll grow up without you.
4) Dating. Terrifying. The other end of an instant message convo is a broad wall from which to ask someone out on a date. It's an even bigger wall when you carry on a relationship online. Save some stories and compliments so that you and your mate look forward to seeing each other in person.
5) Writing. Good handwriting is one of those things like books and records that are fading from popular culture. But like vinyl and a good book cover, handwriting will always have its charm. Even if it's bad, there's something about a handwritten note that makes you want to frame it.
Thanks for listening to The Eagle while you work. Keep it fabulous, Houston!
