One Life at a Time. Although HIV/AIDS is a global disease, we will overcome it only by addressing it at the individual level. Every person must be educated about how HIV is transmitted. Every person must understand the importance of being tested and that HIV is not a reason to be ashamed or to shame others. Every person who is HIV+ must have the support and care they need to live a healthy and productive life. This is how we will end HIV: One Life at a Time. Your attendance at the 2016 World AIDS Day Luncheon will bring us closer to that goal.

This year’s luncheon, generously presented by Chevron, will be held on Thursday, December 1st at Hilton Houston Post Oak. There will be a VIP champagne reception starting at 11:00 a.m. and the luncheon begins at noon. Last year’s luncheon welcomed over 400 attendees that included our keynote speaker, Pam Grier, State Senator John Whitmire, State Senator Sylvia Garcia, State Representative Alma Allen, State Representative Gene Wu, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, former Mayor Annise Parker, Vice Mayor Pro Temp Jerry Davis, Houston City Council Member Ellen Cohen, Houston City Council Member Robert Gallegos, Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, Carolyn Farb, Diane Caplan, Edward Sanchez, KPRC’s Frank Billingsley, Richard Ray, Gordon Bethune, Jessica Rossman, Michael Pearce and Matt Burress, Joni Baird, Travis Torrence, and Dr. Stephen Frangos. Numerous corporate sponsors supported the event as well, including Chevron, Boulevard Realty, Marathon Oil, Subaru of America, Kroger, BBVA Compass, CKP, ExxonMobil, H.E.B, Randall’s Food Markets, Silver Eagle Distributors, Voluntary Insurance Products, and Walgreen’s.

World AIDS Co-Chairs

World AIDS Day Co-Chairs

Bill Baldwin and Ernie Manouse are back to co-chair our World AIDS Day Luncheon for 2016!

Ernie Manouse – Senior Producer/Host, Houston Public Media – Ernie, a native of Binghamton, NY and a graduate of Loyola University Chicago, launched his broadcasting career with NBC News before producing programs at Chicago radio station WLS-AM. In 1996, Ernie joined HoustonPBS, and as an anchor and producer, he has garnered three Emmy Awards, five KATIE Awards, a Houston Press Club Lone Star Award, “viewer’s choice” recognition from multiple local and regional publications, and the title of “Ultimate Interviewer” from the Houston Chronicle.

Bill Baldwin – Owner, Boulevard Realty – Most people know me as the proud broker and owner of Boulevard Realty. To toot our horn, the firm has about 60 agents in Houston and Galveston, and together we once again ranked in the top 10 real estate firms selling inside the loop last year. In fact, we also ranked 44th out of well over 3000 real estate firms in all of Houston. Looking past those numbers, I’m simply proud of the fact that we could be of service to so many Houstonians, and we’re all grateful to have formed lasting relationships with those who count on us as trusted advisors.

Keynote Speaker Sean Strub

Sean Strub is a longtime HIV survivor and activist, founder of POZ magazine, director of the Sero Project and a proponent of PLHIV-led advocacy and PLHIV networks. He is the author of Body Counts, A Memoir of Politics, AIDS, Sex and Survival (Scribner, 2014). His short film, HIV is Not a Crime, has introduced the problem of HIV criminalization to audiences worldwide. Mr. Strub was also the first openly HIV-positive person to run for the U.S. Congress. Mr. Strub produced the off-Broadway hit The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me and served as a member of the board of the Global Network of People Living with HIV.

Sean is the author of Body Counts: A Memoir of Activism, Sex, and Survival. He will hold a signing of the book at Brazos Bookstore as part of the World AIDS Day commemoration. The book will be available for purchase at the luncheon and the signing will take place immediately following the luncheon. AFH is immensely grateful to Brazos bookstore for organizing the signing event!
