May 5th, 1981 Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers released their fourth album “Hard Promises”.

The album was not without controversy.

Tom’s record company, MCA, planned to raise the list price on albums from $8.98 to $9.98, starting with this album.

Petty not only didn’t like this idea, he spoke about his dislike for it in the press.

Tom thought of not turning the album in to MCA because of that.

It was even considered to name the album “$8.98″.

Tom did eventually win the battle to keep the price where it was.

But he couldn’t help but get a dig in anyway.

The album cover is Petty in a record store in front of a rack of albums priced $8.98.

The album has many great tracks and even opens with one of Tom’s most well known songs, “The Waiting”.

Stevie Nicks makes an appearance on this album on a duet called “Insider”.

The song was originally going to be on Stevie’s album.

But Tom felt it fit too well with the rest of the songs on “Hard Promises” and he asked Stevie if she minded if he kept it.

In exchange, he gave her the song “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” for her album “Bella Donna”.

That song was recorded around this time and of course, it also was a big hit.

Video was just starting to happen with MTV around this time, so a few videos were shot for songs off this album.

Video was in it’s infancy though, and I think that can be seen in a couple of these clips.

Check out a few of the videos below.
