We battle the flu every year and after 2 years of fighting COVID, many people are looking for alternatives to help. New research shows that the answer may be a glass of alcohol. But, not any and all alcohol. Red wine showed the best results.

The research comes from the British database UK Biobank and was published in Frontiers In Nutrition. It was then analyzed at Shenzhen Kangning Hospital in China. According to the UK paper “Mirror”, “Across the study 473,957 subjects were used, 16,559 of whom tested positive for COVID. It then used a model to come to various conclusions on how different alcoholic drinks would affect your protection against Covid.” The study showed that if you drink 5 or more glasses of red wine a week, you are 17% less likely to catch the virus. Scientists believe the high levels of polyphenol are responsible since they it also helps with the flu and other respiratory illnesses.

White wine and Champagne were found to be beneficial in lowering your risk as well. Before you go guzzling any alcoholic drink you can find, if you drink 5 or more glasses of beer or cider a week, those in the study were at a 28% higher risk of getting Covid.

Science has shown the best way to protect yourself from the virus is getting vaccinated, social distancing, and wearing a mask. You can try adding a glass of red wine, it’s worth a shot (no pun intended).

Stay healthy!
