Lollypop Farm, the Human Society of Greater Rochester, said many of the cats suffered smoke inhalation, the Democrat & Chronicle reported. It is unclear if all of them will survive.

A fire, confined to one room, started around 1 a.m., officials said. Firefighters arrived to find two adults outside the home. They refused medical treatment.

The homeowner told the animal shelter there were 70 cats in the house. However the agency has so far removed 97. The shelter is asking the public for help adopt or foster the cats. Donations are also needed to help cover veterinary costs.

The fire is under investigation.
