LAS VEGAS – A New Haven, Connecticut police officer is facing federal charges after a Friday morning rollover crash in Las Vegas killed one of his passengers, also a Connecticut cop.
According to Las Vegas police, 34-year-old Robert Ferraro was driving a 2020 Rolls-Royce Cullinan “at a high rate of speed” just before 4 a.m. when he lost control of the sport utility vehicle, struck a Ford Mustang parked in a driveway and hit multiple utility poles, causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof.
A 25-year-old man, identified later by the New Haven Police Department as officer Joshua Castellano, was ejected from the Rolls-Royce’s front passenger seat. Castellano was declared dead a short while later at a Las Vegas area hospital, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

According to the Hartford Courant, Ferraro was charged Saturday morning with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance resulting in death. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, acting New Haven Chief of Police Renee Dominguez told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Las Vegas police confirmed that Ferraro, along with two other men and two women in the SUV at the time of the crash, suffered minor injuries, the Review-Journal reported.
“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we learned about this yesterday,” Dominguez said during a Saturday morning news conference outside police headquarters. “The grief and the pain that the men and women of the police department are going through is that of [losing] a brother.”
