The group, known as Dads on Duty, has been taking shifts at the Southwood High School in Shreveport for about a month, greeting students in the morning and keeping the peace throughout the day, CBS News reported.

“We’re dads. We decided the best people who can take care of our kids are who? Are us,” Michael LaFitte, the group’s founder, told the network.

And the intervention has been well-received by school administrators, considering at least one of the students arrested was accused of battery after allegedly punching an assistant principal, KTBS-TV reported.

Southwood Principal Kim Pendleton told the TV station that the students love having the dads around because so many of them are familiar faces from their neighborhoods and churches.

According to the students, the volunteer safety monitors have been effective because there has not been a single violent incident on campus since the group showed up en force about a month ago, CBS News reported.

One student told the network that the fighting stopped immediately after the dad patrol showed up, and “people started going to class.”

“I immediately felt a form of safety,” the student said.
