Huma Abedin, in an upcoming memoir, said she was sexually assaulted by an unnamed U.S. senator while she was an aide to then Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Abedin, who is a longtime aide to Clinton, described the incident in “Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds,” a memoir that is set to be published next week.
According to Abedin, after a dinner attended by some senators and their aides, one of the senators invited her into his apartment for coffee.
“Then, in an instant, it all changed. He plopped down to my right, put his left arm around my shoulder, and kissed me, pushing his tongue into my mouth, pressing me back on the sofa,” she describes. “I was so utterly shocked, I pushed him away.”
Abedin writes that the man apologized and seemed surprised, saying he had “misread” her “all this time,” according to The Guardian. The Guardian received an advance copy of the book.
She writes that she wanted to leave “without this ending badly,” so she apologized and left.
“Then I said something only the twentysomething version of me would have come up with – ‘I am so sorry’ – and walked out, trying to appear as nonchalant as possible.”
According to Abedin, the incident occurred between 2001 and 2009 when Clinton was a senator.
Abedin wrote in the memoir that after the incident, she buried memories of the assault until similar allegations against U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh triggered her memory years later.
During Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, the testimony from Christina Ford triggered the memory, Abedin wrote.
Kavanaugh denied Ford’s claim that he sexually assaulted her when the two of them were teenagers.
Abedin also described her experiences with her husband, Anthony Weiner, who was sent to prison for 21 months in a sexting scandal.
An excerpt from the book was published by Vogue. The book is set to be released on Tuesday.
