According to the TV station, Palmucci was being housed in the general population pod at the Charlotte County Jail, with “similar classified inmates,” but was alone in his cell.

“Per policy, corrections deputies walk the pod once every 60 minutes to ensure the safety and security of all inmates. Around 6 a.m. prior to shift change, James Palmucci was observed in his cell,” the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

Jail staff was en route to notify Palmucci of the morning’s court appearance and found him dead in his cell with fabric around his neck, WPEC reported.

Detention members and jail medical staff performed life-saving measures while awaiting medics, the sheriff’s office stated, noting an autopsy will be performed.

The sheriff’s office also stated that no one had threatened Palmucci during his stay in the jail and that no one who had contact with him recalled him ever mentioning intentions of self-harm, WINK reported.

According to WPEC, Palmucci’s victims were teenage girls, whom he connected with over Snapchat, and authorities also found videos on his phone of him interacting with the victims.

Palmucci had faced the possibility of life in prison if convicted, WINK reported.
