Milton Munson’s obituary, which ran in the Hastings Tribune, remembered a veteran and pharmacist and included the line: “In lieu of flowers, please place an irresponsibly large wager on Nebraska beating Iowa.”

The request for bets caught the attention of two radio hosts in Nebraska, who decided to honor Munson’s wishes by making a bet for the Huskers to beat Iowa, the Associated Press reported. When they talked about it on the radio, more people started donating. By Wednesday morning, more than $6,100 had been collected.

Munson’s son got in touch with one of the radio hosts involved and said the family will use some of the money to bet on the game but will donate the rest to the mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

Nebraska’s quarterback is out for Friday’s game.
