CHICAGO – A toddler was critically hurt in a suspected road-rage shooting near Chicago’s Grant Park, authorities said.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times and WLS-TV, the incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday on Lake Shore Drive. Gunfire erupted during a possible dispute between two drivers “over not letting somebody into a lane of traffic,” Chicago police Cmdr. Jacob Alderden told reporters. Police said a 21-month-old boy inside one of the vehicles, which crashed near Monroe Street, suffered a gunshot wound to the head, WLS reported.
A good Samaritan rushed the boy and the car’s other occupants to a nearby hospital, according to the news outlets. The toddler was later taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in critical condition, the Sun-Times reported.
Police said they recovered a handgun from the crashed car, the news outlets reported. Later Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said shots had been fired from both vehicles involved, according to the Sun-Times.
Police have detained a person of interest in the case, the news outlets reported.
