STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Michigan police officer is being praised for his quick thinking under pressure after he saved the life of a baby girl who wasn’t breathing.

According to the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday outside a home on Waltham Drive in Sterling Heights. A dashcam captured the baby’s panicked family members pleading for help as Sterling Heights police Officer Cameron Maciejewski arrived at the scene.

After quickly determining that something was blocking the 3-week-old’s airway, Maciejewski picked up the infant and began performing back thrusts, the Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. The baby then coughed and started to cry, according to the post.

“If it wasn’t for Ofc. Maciejewski’s quick, calm, lifesaving actions, the outcome of this incident could have been tragically different,” the post read. “Not only did the officer save the baby, but the officer did an outstanding job consoling the family.”
